Hi
I'm new to the forum and currently looking to buy a cooper S. I only have a budget of £6k max so obviously looking at the older cars. I have been looking around the site trying to educate myself on what to look for when buying one. My preferred choice is grey with grey roof but a black roof will suffice. second colour would be white with black roof.
What things should I be looking for when viewing cars?. The steering pump and column seem to be a major concern but from what I've learned here, it seems these can fail any time without warning.
Is this concern also on the facelift model ? or are they less prone to these failures.
To my mind going for a car with the least number of miles with a full service history is my best bet, however my mate pointed out that car's with more miles may have had these pumps and columns' gear box's replaced and be a better bet.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, should I be put off by a car that's had lots of work done to it and plenty of miles, or do I go for one with less which could need these things doing in the future. I'm starting to worry about things to much and getting myself in a pickle,

Just don't want to buy a dog.
Cheers Paul
