5-year MINI warranty When will BMW & MINI start offering 5-year warranties on their cars, following in the footsteps of other big-hitters like Toyota and Vauxhall (the latter of whom now offer a lifetime / 100k mile warranty!). Surely it's inevitable as more and more of their competitors jump on the bandwagon, and it would send out a clear message to consumers that they believe their products can stand the test of time. 3 years seem quite stingy now!

I agree with all your comments but I think this time it's different. It's one thing having cheapo brands like Kia and Hyundai having long warranties but now two of the biggest manufactures in Vauxhall and Toyota are moving this way (with their direct competitors Ford and Honda surely feeling the heat to react) I am convinced the likes of BMW will have to do the same. The industry is dog eat dog, and sure MINI may sell regardless, but without doubt they'd sell more by matching the longer warranty options of their competitors. I can't wait to see what they come back with. Give it a year.

BMW give you a five year warranty on the R56 S, what a joke! They will have to do something about their awful build quality before they can start to think about giving their cars a five year warranty, otherwise they may go bankrupt with all the warranty work they are having to do at present to sort out the cars they've thrown together in the last three years! And speaking of warranty work, our R56 S is going back to the dealer again! This time to sort out the coked up cylinder head, squealing alternator, dodgy fuel pump and passenger window which has a life of it's own now! The car has only done just under 27,000 miles! I'm really fed up with the pile of crap now, time for it to go! P.

Toyota were forced into the five year warranty after a spate of bad publicity and lets face it apart from reliability why would you buy a Toyota? As for Vauxhalls lifetime warranty they are careful to say "it could be a liftime warranty" as it isn't transferable. It also depends on a yearly check during which they will say x y and z need doing at your cost if you want the warranty to continue. Volvo had a similar scheme sometime ago. As far as I am concerned it is the same as high equipment levels. It is a cover to hope you don't notice how poor the basic car (design/engine/chassis) is. However long term the trend will continue to be for longer warranties as cars as getting ever more reliable. ![]() Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs

BMW/MINI will only offer a 5 year warranty when they absolutely have to, ie, when all other manufacturers are! They are more than happy to be charging us 140GBP per hour for labour! and they are always quick to blame a fault on, general wear & tear, driver misuse etc.

I think if anyone should offer a 5-year warranty it's BMW/MINI. We pay a premium for their cars so it's annoying that their warranty terms fall a long way behind cheaper brands. As things stand today, I'd go the second hand route for a MINI as new prices have got quite, well, pricey. But should they offer a 5-year warranty then I'd most likely buy new - it would be a far more sensible investment.

I don't think until the likes of Audi and Merc offer longer warranties will BMW consider it. Lets be honest if you're in the market for a new BMW, Merc or Audi you are hardly going to settle for a Vauxhall, Ford or Toyota. And lets not forget most of these longer warranties come with quite a few restrictions. Take Vauxhalls life time warranty yet its only up to 100,000 miles.
