United-Kingdom Running a new MINI in?

Hi there,

I'm new on here and was just wanted some advice from all you experience drivers!

I'm about to take delivery of a brand new MINI One and wondered if you have to be careful with how you drive brand new cars. Is there a need to "run them in". Some people I've spoken to say you shouldn't go above 50mph at first, others have said just don't "red line" it.

Whats the deal with new MINI's?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I try to follow the handbook suggestion of driving gently at varying engine speeds up to 4500 rpm (petrol) or 3500 rpm (diesel) for the first 1200 miles and am also careful to avoid stressing the engine at low speeds.

I also change the oil at 5000 miles.

If you follow the above advice, you should not have to worry about excessive oil burning or valve problems. Even with the above restrictions you should still enjoy motoring in your new MINI and your gas mileage should be pretty good too for a new engine.
I drive through my city each work day, to and from work rather than take the high speed circle expressway around. This is my break in driving. I initially got 25.6 mpg in my 2011 MCS manual, but I got 27.2 when I filled up yesterday. These are actual MPGs, not from the incar puter which is about 2 mpg optimistic.

Except that the OP hasn't taken delivery yet so probably won't have a manual to look at yet!

(I remember asking lots of basic questions here while I was waiting for my first MINI and always appreciated the helpful and friendly replies so I was just trying to do the same. OK? )
