Cooper won't drive in reverse

Hi all,

My cooper (manual, 2005) won't drive in reverse.

The gear stick feels unusual. Like there is no spring or resistance.

I have drove around the block but when I put it in reverse, it moves forward slowly!

Can anyone give me an idea on the problem please?

Thanks

Evening Pove. I too had issues with my 05 Cooper about a month or two ago now, but with all my gears, as opposed to reverse only. My gearstick felt incredibly light and I could put it into gear without using the clutch, but got nothing from any of them, bar the gear I was "stuck" in, when the problem occured. I'm assuming 1 through 5 work fine for you and reverse is the only issue?

The problem for me, was with my gear selector cable. If all your other gears are working fine, then I'm not 100% sure what the issue might be, but I just thought I'd ask as when I put it into reverse, I too went forward (again however, due to the fact that I was stuck in 3rd or 4th gear). The reason I ask, is because the cable itself, is a bit of a nightmare to replace!

All my gears are working fine apart from reverse, I have to lift the clutch pedal out slightly to find reverse. If it's not in properly and I accelerate, it sounds like its grinding the gear.

Annoying, and sometimes a bit embarrassing, but I work with it..
