Popping/burbling on overrun is a feature of the R53 - not sure about the R56.

Yea its does pop on the overrun - nowhere near as much as the r53 tho..its a real deep gurgle of a sound, its brilliant! I tended to get it when accelerating hard up to the revline and changing gear or up to the revline and then easing off the accelerator! also noticed it more after a good wreck round the roads! Wouldnt say there is anything wrong with yours..you just aint driving it hard enough

i had a question about the overrun/blurb/popping. I had a 2002 S and never heard it. I have an 05 S now and there is a very loud popping sound when I just step on the accelerator without even driving the car. Is this the same popping sound that is normal?

The R56's don't pop as much as they used to. Apparently if the ar has had a recent ECU software upgrade, it stopped the popping.

Yeah, my R53 Cooper S Works would pop and bang like no tomorrow... as someone else has commented, even stamping on the gas in neutral would give the impression of machine gun fire.

My R56 JCW was a similar story... dare I say it, even amplified. That was of course until MINI performed their most recent software re-flash about 12 months ago... all the lovely pops and bangs, gone!

R56-wise; people have complained about the loss of pops and bangs, but apparently MINI have axed it due to "customer feedback"? I mean, who buys a Cooper S or JCW and then objects to a little noise when they're giving it some?! Very disappointing - plenty of threads on here discussing the subject, but MINI are adamant that it was the right decision!

Yes it is annoying. I have heard JCW's giving a good pop but looks like not as good as they used to be. Standard R56's hardly pop at all.

Put decent petrol in it and that might help a little. I say decen shell optimal and the alike.

Wow I didn't realize this had disappeared in the later models... no exhaust pops, not supercharger whine - seems they've taken all the fun out of them.

Or just the exhaust system of the JCW. I ordered this as an option. On my cooper s cabrio.

My 05 MCS pops and I bloody love it.

Its nice and refined (ish!) when you're driving carefully and makes a brilliant whine as you plant it followed by a satisfying pop as you change gear...beautiful.

Discovered this today whilst revving in neutral on 2011 R56. Only seems to happen when sport mode is on. FUN
