United-Kingdom Dealer programmable options

Just phoned my local MINI dealer to find out what dealer programable options are available for activation/deactivation on my car.

I've been quoted 1 hours labour all inclusive @ £81.00.

Is this expensive or about the normal price?

It would be interesting to know what "dealer programable options" you have been offered.

exactly what i was thinking - but i read wozza's post to mean that he wanted to know what was available for his car and they were going to charge him labour to find out.

presumably his actual car will need to be plugged into a computer to display what is, and is not, currently programmed and what other things could be programmed

In Norway you have to pay over 200£ for programming/coding, and one hour labour is allso 200£. Don't have a breakdown over here...........

That price does include switching on or off everything that is available.

£81/hour is pretty cheap in terms of BMW/MINI labour. That said, it's not an hour-long job... I guess they won't charge by the half hour?

Is the car under any sort of BMW/MINI warranty, and did you buy it from the dealer in question? I've always had things like this tweaked for free, either when collecting a new car (brand new, or Cherished), or when taking it in for servicing or warranty work.

What do you actually want enabling/disabling, and is it worth £80 to you? That's the question I'd be asking myself.

My MINI is a 2004 Cooper S, with no BMW/MINI warranty and I bought it from an independent dealer.

Not even sure what is actually available, I know that I don't have:
Automatic locking after starting to drive,
Auto daytime driving lights,

Any way of turning any of these things on without going to a MINI dealer?

Hmmm.....

With my R56 JCW been told unofficially that the dealer can tweak limp home modes and thresholds but not sure. All the rest can be done thru the dash (requires patience!).

Yeah, while you can set a bunch of stuff yourself on second gen models, I don't think any of the options can be changed on first gen cars without a visit to the dealership.

I can't remember off the top of my head which options are/were actually available. Drive-away locking is the obvious one... and "follow me home" lights, plus functions operated from the key, I think? Possibly stuff like the number of flashes when you flick the indicator stalk, too? I know this is a dash option on newer cars, but I think it was a dealer set option originally. A search of the forum will probably pull up the others...

That said, I'm not sure daytime running lights are a programmable option outside of certain markets? And "auto lights" definitely aren't a feature which can be programmed (they were a paid option, and part of the visibility package - the actual stalk for the lights is different, whereby you twist the opposite way to enable/disable).

Hope that helps!

According to this thread linked below these options are available to program on Gen 1 Mini's:

1.The doors automatically lock after starting off
2.The doors unlock when engine stops
3.When unlock button is pressed once it opens drivers door only, and second press unlocks passenger door.
4.When unlock is held, windows automatically wind down.
5.Home lights on for 40 seconds

(I was quoted half hour labour by a MINI Dealer to program a new key, I think that is the min. labour charge on anything)

You could of course try programming the options DIY but need to be very computer savvy according to this thread retrofitting the factory alarm:

Thanks for all the help and information guys.

I think I'm going to keep the £81.00 in my pocket and put it towards a few mods instead.
