which diesel

hi all , my first post..
i am changing my SMART for something a bit bigger.
i am seriously looking at a Mini Diesel but which one?
ie
a 'cheap' early 1.4
or a newer more expensive 1.6
what year did the 1.6 come out in 2007 or more recently?
also is there anywhere i can find if the figures stated are realistic eg 64-72 mpg combined?
any advice and direction to other treads would be great

Hi we had a smart Diesel load of rubbish so we brought a mini one 60 plate and we get 41 MPG was looking at diesel but unless your doing 15,000 miles a year you won't gain a lot

The latest mid-2010 onwards BMW-engined Cooper D would be my choice (as opposed to the earlier second generation PSA-engined offering - discussed in this thread), but I guess it depends on your budget. How much are you looking to spend?

I really can't get my head around buying a Mini Diesel. My R56 Cooper S can hit 40mpg with effort and will reliably do 36mpg. My friends Cooper R56 will do 45-47 mpg and is a petrol. I've driven the new Mini One Deisel (alright wasn't run in so must take this into account) but I couldn't crack 50mpg in it. With the reduced performance, extra cost of Diesel and the usual problems that Diesel engines suffer that petrol engines do not surely the overall life cost of owning a petrol is less??
