Gear box

Hi!
So I've got a niggling issue with my 2002 R50 Mini Cooper.
When I put the stick into reverse, it doesn't go all the way in. I need to lift the clutch slightly to get it into gear. If I touch the accelerator, it grinds the gear.

On start-up, it's sometimes the same putting it into 1st, but not when driving (usually).

I know it's a tight gearbox, but is this normal??

It's my first car.

Hi

I think you may be having the dreaded midland gearbox issues .
If you do a few searches here at mini2 about midland gear boxes they may help
I would say first make shore the gear shift linkages are all ok first no slack or wear in the system .
But to be honest it sounds like the gearbox needs a overhaul/repair
