Main Beam staying on Mini One R50

Discovered a problem with the main beam tonight, switching on the main beam is fine by pulling the stalk towards the wheel but when doing the same action to switch the main beam off, the headlights stay on and the warning light on the dash also stays on. Only way to get it to go off is to push the stalk back manually. Then it comes back on again when the indicators are used and again requires to be pushed back manually to switch it off.

I am guessing the stalk is worn but wondered if there is any other cause

It may have just been dirty, if it is you have probably cleaned it off. I hope it's sorted!
