Mini lock without the alarm

Hi, sorry for the newbie's question, but I can't figure out how to do this: i'd sometimes like to lock my new mini for 10 minutes without setting the alarm on (if I leave the dog in for example).
Is there a way I can do this? It's probably easy, but ...

Lock the driver side door with the physical key (second gen fob has a slide-out key inside it), and leave the alarm completely off?

In the summer I sometimes park my MINI (2nd generation) outside my house with the windows slightly down. If you press the button on the remote to lock the car, then press it again, you'll hear a click: This de-activates the internal movement sensor bit of the alarm, which I assume would enable you to leave the dog in the car.
