Offline | Blacked out license plates What is about people's license plates that makes them fudge them in the pictures of their cars? i don't care and can't for the life of me figure why anyone else does. In case you didn't notice they are out there for the whole world to see all of the time. aka KWKSLVR Member: Southern Ontario MINI Club BMW Club of Canada - Trillium Chapter |

| MINI2 Regular | Re: Blacked out license plates You know-funny you mention that. I started to, then I thought "well duh-as if 300 people didn't see them on my way to work!" And honestly, I can't figure out why people either. License plates are pretty much public knowledge-I mean I guess someone could take your place and track you down, but they could anyway if that's what their mind was set on doing-something tells me stalking really isn't that hard to do. ![]() Winnie "the Mini" Cooper "nothing to fear-nothing to doubt"-radiohead |

| MINI2 Senior | there has been a lot of fraud with people cloning cars, attatching another cars identity to the other car (i.e. a stolen car) to give it a new identity there has been a number of cases of people getting speeding tickets from the other end of the country and them not even been there! people can see them when they see the car but its not taking any extra risk by hiding them.... hope this clears it up David ![]() |

| MINI2 Newbie | Red Light Camera Spoof Theory has it that some of those polarized plate covers will prevent a red light camera from getting a clear image of the plate; therefore, no ticket in the mail. Not sure if it really works and I believe its illegal in some places. AUsomTiger '03 MCS due in February IB/W Lapis Blue Leather Combos 1,2,3 + HK |

Offline | Um . . . Ausom, I don't think that's what they are talking about. I believe they are addressing blanking out the plates on posted pictures of cars. I think it is a privacy issue. Although the registration plates are publicly visible on the car, getting theowners name and address from the plate is another thing. Images on the net get a different circulation, and get tied to a user who may have contact info and such listed. A little bit of jigsaw puzzle working can yield a lot of personal info that way. In California, if you want to get the name of a person from their plate, you pay a fee to the DMV and fill out a form that asks who you are why you want the info, and a copy of the form is sent to the car's registered owner. At least that is how it worked a few years ago. I think it is more difficult now. The privacy laws were strengthened after a few high-profile stalkings. MC/VR/B/PP&SP/CVT/Xenon |

| Indecisive MINI Owner | Re: Blacked out license plates This is the Internet. Is't full of wierdo's. Not that I'm saying people on Mini2 are maniacs, but it doesn't hurt to tr and be a little safer does it? I never *expected* someone to steal my keys out of the ignition of my car by putting their arm through my window whilst I was parked and sat in the car on Sunday night, but it happened. ![]() Jon Blakeburn 2002 Raven Blue Lupo GTi |

| Indecisive MINI Owner | Nope, they legged it. Needed alarm and remote central locking frequency changing, so that they can no longer press the remote and flash the car's lights to see which car it is, and I've had to order another key @ £300. ![]() Jon Blakeburn 2002 Raven Blue Lupo GTi |

Offline | See the number plate on MINI2. Read the spec of the MINI that goes with it on MINI2. See number plate locally. Follow home. Walk in front door and nick keys. Sell to highest bidder. I'm just joking, but you never know!! ![]() ps. We are trusting on this site though. I mean, someone, on their first post, askes for the cost and spec of our MINI's and we just type away!! ![]() |

Offline | Re: Blacked out license plates I have first hand experience of why you should black out registration plates.I had my Impreza plates shown on an Internet site, in a "How To" technical article 2 years ago. 4 weeks later the car was stolen from my home , after they broke into the house to steal the keys from the kitchen. Car was recovered by TRACKER, and the culprits caught, they admitted to the police they had traced me back to my home address by nebulous means after seeing the car on the Internet site. So I suggest that you all follow the example and black out your number plates, and save yourself possible future hassle. Offline | I have pics of current and previous cars on car websites and routinely smudge the no plate for reasons mentioned previously. Now the trend is to nick the car while you're in it or turn up at your house and take the keys. For the sake of smudging not really worth it - after all - most people just want to see pics of the car and couldn't give 2 hoots about the plate. I believe that all you have to do is request a special form from the DVLA, say something that sounds half believable as to why you need the information and they then send back details of owners and addresses. 260909 ![]() |

| Indecisive MINI Owner | I was just saying it was unexpected... like we don't expect people to use obtain our address through mailcous means, but if they do... It would only take one not-so-nice fellow who works for a company such as the DVLA office (In the UK) to get our home address! May as well smear the registrations for the sake of a few seconds! ![]() Jon Blakeburn 2002 Raven Blue Lupo GTi |
