United-States The Clubman vs the Countryman

Our two-person household (USA) suddenly finds itself needing two cars. The Mini S hatchback has already been ordered, and for the second car, it's come down to a choice between the Clubman S and the VW Golf TDI. Basic criteria - a more practical back seat option in a small, nimble, economical and preferably European-built package.

The problem is that the Clubman seems almost TOO niche. We have concerns over resale value of the car (it will be bought new) - should we ever need or want to sell it. Our research, test drives, etc indicate that in every way this is the right car for our needs, but the consensus I seem to be getting is that the car is a much poorer seller than average on both the used and new car markets, and that MINI may even discontinue it in favor of the Countryman.

Can anyone confirm that?

I would still go for the Clubman. I think it looks alot cooler and down here the resale value is actually higher than the other models. Unfortunately the Countryman has become popular so knowing how it will hold its value in the next few years is anyone's guess.

I would go for the Clubman if it suits your needs........there are plans to continue it on the next Mk3 Mini platform with a rear side door on both sides I think, see under F54 model number:

Thanks for your input. The Clubman was ordered yesterday before I saw these replies, so your responses provided the comfort of validation. The Countryman was just too big and "removed" from the classic MINI. The choice was easy once I realized that if only the Countryman were offered, I'd be sitting around wishing there was something like a Clubman. We tend to buy new and keep cars for a long time - so resale is not as important to us perhaps as usability. The Clubman is a perfect solution.
