Blown up 2005 Cooper S

My son was driving our 2005 S and the clutch / pressure plate exploded. Several large holes in the trans housing. Unfortunately, a large piece blew through the cold air intake to the super-charger. A lot of the debri got sucked in and went through the super-charger and stopped at the intercooler. Small bits made it into the intake manifold. Is this a common problem? THe clutch / pressure plate literally exploded. Now we get to replace everything.

Not sure how common this is in a mini, however, anytime I've ever seen it the tranny was being stressed by high engine RPM's or "popping the clutch" such as when a car is being drag raced! Hummmmmmmm
