Wales Mini wierd engine problem... :S

Hi guys. I'm new here so be nice

I got my mini as my first car. It's a MINI ONE D 1.4 75HP.
I didn't notice it when we got the car off eBay as the chap we bough it from drove it a fair few miles to the train station where my dad met him. So it was all nice and warm! anyway, since I've had it, everytime I go to start it cold, it might start and run really rough for a second and then die. I'll start it again and it will run... So no real probs? Well when it gets going, she runs like an absolute sack of sh*t! May I add this is only when cold. It ticks over really rough, sounds like a bloody tractor . There is loads of smoke everywhere-it will leave a soot patch on the chippings of my drive! Anyways, until I've Ben out for a spin to warm it up it runs crap. If you listen to the engine, about 10 seconds after I've first started it the revs start to drop. They may drop to 550 ish rpm for a second or two and then jump back to 'normal'. This will happen every like 4-5 seconds or so until it's really warm :S another thing is.. Well what I normally do like before college for example, is get into it and fire it up, and leave it to run for maybe a minute or so(dad taught that any car with a turbo needs time to get tr oil flowing around it before you bring the revs up). But I will floor the accelerator and it will do nothing for a few seconds, then the revs will increase really slowly to about 2000rpm, then it will be ok... There is no grunt at this stage either, like I have to ride the clutch to get it moving or it will die on me unless I'm literally red lining it! Never really bothered me because after you've been out for about a minute rs completely fine! Oh and there's massive black/blue smoke when cold too! :/ I took it to the mechanic and he said it almost sounded like the timing was out- but it wasn't. He also checked the glow plugs.. All fine. Changed oil and air filters, oil was fine. And it passed the MOT. I don't know what it could be. I'm skint because of this car haha, so if it's something big to fix ill be really screwed. Any mechanics on here or people with experience/expertise in this field? If there's anything I can do to give a better idea just tell me!

Much obliged, thanks in advance!

Gareth

Oh and it's a 2003 model.
