New brake pads fitted but sensor still going off!

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums and although I feel this question may have been answered, Ive searched the forum several times and unable to find a specific answer to my problem!

I have a 57 plate Mini Cooper Diesel.

Just before Christmas (typical timing!) I was driving home and got the red (!) light on my dashboard along with the car on hydraulic lift image on the tachometer. I took it to my nearest independent garage the next day who were very helpful and said I needed 4 new brake pads and that he would order them in with the sensors to arrive later that day.

I had them replaced and he showed me the old ones, telling me that when he hooked up a laptop to the car, it said the fault was the front brake pads but he replaced both the front and the back as the backs would be going soon after. After replacing them, he said he could eliminate the fault on the back pads but everytime he tried to eliminate the fault on his laptop for the front pads, as soon as he turned the ignition on again, it would pop back up.

I even tried entering the system menu as explained in your forum and resetting myself, but again, the fault light still remains. He assures me the car is safe to drive and it may be a fault with the electrics (?!?!). I've been away with work till now so am looking at getting it sorted this week. Anyone got any advice, knowledge or experience of this problem? Also, how much would it cost to get it looked at?

Many thanks in advance!

Tom

yes check to make sure he replaced the sensors. ( and pads )
did the pads he showed you look worn ?

it is a possibility that it was not the pads that brought on the light, and if he has fitted new pads and sensors properly it would point to something else.

I've had this before... Is he using Siemens probes or cheaper spurious sensors? The cheap ones just don't always work

Apologies for the slow reply.

Im still driving around with this warning light on. He said the front brake pad warning was the only warning that flashed up when he hooked up a laptop.

He explained that he had changed the sensors and that the back pads werent far from activating the warning so he replaced them too with the same make of sensor. He said that the back sensor warning didnt come up after being replaced, just the front. It would disappear after he cancelled it on the laptop but as soon as the ignition was started up, it came back on. He also explained that he did a test with the old pad sensor where he cut the wires and joined them together to "cheat" the system as such.

He then explained it may be the wiring in the car(?!?!?!). Any idea how much that would cost? Ive been away with work till recently so havent had chance till now since it happened in Dec.
