Cool Turbo blown?

Last night on the way home my 08 Cooper S temperature light came on, then an oil light.. I pulled over and opened the hood and noticed my turbo was orange with heat! WTF!! I could understand if I was driving like a maniac, but I was just cruising... Anyone know what the deal is and how much this will cost to be repaired?

sounds like you ran low on oil so the turbo was starved of oil causing it to heat up, you might be lucky and the bearings might be ok - only way to check would be checking for play in the shaft of the turbo.

just got off the phone with the shop.. they said the thermostat housing somehow disintegrated and all the coolant leaked out.. also it made a turbo oil line burst and all of the oil also dumped.. i was quoted $1182.00 to fix. Is that reasonable?

Depends a little on whether you stopped the engine in time so the oil/coolant loss hasnt caused that any damage too??

Ive just had mine replaced and it cost £900, £500 for a new (or remanufactured) turbo, plus all the oil pipes to ensure it doesnt happen again.
It had oil changes as often as mini recommended so I was pretty ****ed off when I had to pay that!!!
