United-Kingdom When should I use supercharger?

Hi all,

I have just purchased a 2002 cooper s which I am very pleased with. It is the first time I have had a car with a supercharger, not to mention 6 gears. Excuse me if my question seems rather naive but is there a right way to use a supercharger to get the best from it, eg drop down to third gear or do I just use it in all gears? I am assuming I just put my foot down on the gas pedal and it kicks in?

Cheers Steve

Superchargers work all the time the engine is running, the higher the revs the higher the corresponding charge or contribution from the supercharger. I had a Jaguar S type R, 4.2 V8 supercharged, loved the supercharger wine and the 400 BHP. Just drive it that's all you need to do. I really wanted a supercharged mini the turbo is not so much fun, hardly any noise from it. You don't get any lag with a supercharger it is spinning all the time the engine is spinning. That said there is very little lag from the cooper S turbo.

Beaten to it by Mr Loz.

The 'charger is linked to the crankshaft by a belt so is in constant use

Quite a lot of owners have a reduced size pulley fitted, makes the charger spin faster = more power

Thanks both equally! I understand now. My wish list is growing and I've only had the car a week! Shortened pulley, new air filter, sport exhaust and remap. My wife won't what hits her if I follow this lot through and she borrows my S to pop to the shops!!
Cheers Steve

Ha ha, I know exactly what you mean Steve,

When I bought mine almost 8 years ago I had no plans to mod it at all, joined a couple of MINI forums.......my wallet has been suffering ever since

Probably the most enjoyable fun car I've ever owned & still puts a smile on my face
