running on run flat tyre?

I had a puncture yesterday I drove home about 12 miles. I propose to get a new tyre at the weekend, my question is - will I still be able to drive it to the garage (3 miles) after a few days being laid up?

Yes.....that is why Runflat tyres have stiff sidewalls.......however once you have driven any distance in the runflat condition the tyre is supposed to be replaced........if you stop immediately on getting a puncture and fit a spare wheel then the runflat tyre can be repaired like any normal tyre as long as the puncture is within the main tread area, therefore much cheaper!

Some tyre dealers and manufacturers will insist they cannot repair runflats but this is purely because they cannot know or 'trust' whether you have driven in the runflat condition and therefore damaged the sidewalls.

Thanks Very much

I have sought out a "budget" replacement. Having just bought the car, my next purchase is a sports exhaust (any suggestions?) then I may think about replacing all four run flats. However, that said, it was freezing cold when I got my puncture and the joy of not having to replace the wheel at the side of the road was rather splendid.

Cheers Steve

Spending money on a sports exhaust but saving money on the only contact your car has with the road is a bit at odds. I drove with a flat run flat and parked the car up for three days and then drove 4 miles to the tyre shop. The tyre had a hole in the side wall and would not hold any air at all. Driving with a flat run flat on the rear was awful the car felt like it was running on jelly tyres on all four wheels.

Budget tyres are cheap for a reason. The tyre is the only thing keeping you in contact with the road, and budget tyres notoriously lack wet grip. In the wet is when you need that extra grip. Put the exhaust money towards better rubber. You won't hear the exhaust when you've aquaplaned off into a ditch. And remember, tyres with the most tread depth go on the rear. Best to the back.

Ps. I'm a qualified forensic tyre examiner.

Hmmmm, budget tyres. The quickest and easiest way to turn a Mini into a Kia Picanto.

Why are normal tyres better than run flat tyres then? I have run flat 18 inch wheels on my JCW but never had anything other than run flats. Just wondered what the advantages of not having run flat tyres are ?

a)better on your wallet.
b)with normal tyres every time you hit a bump,it doesn't feel like your spine is coming thru the top of your head like rft(more so if the car has sport suspension fitted).
c)less tramlining
d)car feels less skittish when on a bumpy road due to softer side walls..

this is what i think after changing my 18"rft to normals..

i didn't realize the firm ride was due to the run flat tyres. Might replace them for normal tyres when they are due. Also had a look at the cost and the run flats are very expensive like you say at approx £190 each i can see what you mean

I wish people would stop stereotyping all 'budget' tyres as lethal, dangerous, poor performing rubbish.

Whilst I'd be the first to claim that you only get what you pay for; the performance of some less espensive (non runflat) tyres is equal to and in some cases actually better than some of the big brand 'premium' (expensive) tyres!

If you want advice on purchasing the best value non-runflat tyres for your MINI I'd listen to the experience of people who have actually fitted and run their cars on particular brands and specifications of tyre. This forum is a great place to get this kind of information.

Personally I have found that Kuhmo Ecsta non-runflat tyres are performing well on my MCS JCW's and they have better test performance results than some of the premium brand tyres that cost upwards of £50 extra per tyre. The only quality that seems to be inferior to the more expensive tyres is wear rates.

The Kuhmo's are highly recommended by my local independant tyre specialists and they are fitting them onto lots of Golf R32's, BMW M3's, Audi S3's etc.
