1) New MINI model range being launched on November 18 2013. That fact alone immediately damages the resale value of the 'old' model.
2) The MINI is now a pretty common sight on the roads - desirability is reduced compared to the early days.
3) The R56 MINI Cooper S engine has had some serious and well publicised problems affecting resale value. Timing chain problems and carbon build up being the most notable two.
4) Practicality, Fuel Economy, and VED.
I'd say that if you're already worried about the resale value, you'd be better off buying a used example - and probably a Cooper D rather than an S.
I bought my 2010 MINI Clubman S for about $26000 in December of 2009. I sold it for $14000 last September. That's roughly 54% but in about 2 1/2 years. I was expecting it to be worth more, but needless to say I was quite disappointed.
I just recently sold my wife's '04 and only got $3000 for it and I was lucky to get that. After the service and the treatment from MINI in Germany and dealerships here in the U.S. we will never buy another MINI or BMW product.
I've had a genuinely good experience with the local dealerships (both BMW and MINI) here in Oxford, and I believe BMW as a manufacturer are capable of turning out some really well engineered cars. Maybe I've been lucky, but in the last 20 years, I've owned a 5 different BMW's (E36 316i, E36 328i, E46 330D, E39 M5, E63 M6), and 3 different MINIs (R53 Cooper S, R53 Cooper S JCW GP, R56 Cooper), and only ever had a serious problem (red cog of death) with the M6. I still have the R53 and the E46.
However .... MINI really dropped a clanger with the R56 Cooper S engine timing chain issue - both in terms of the *years* they took to design a resilient solution to the problem, and now the treatment of owners who are facing this issue outside of warranty. For me at least, that destroyed the R56 Cooper S proposition entirely. All of the ever increasing number of variants that just aren't 'MINI' anymore has really put me off the brand.
If the MK3 MINI Cooper S is a car to rival the BMW 135i, then I could be tempted.. but it will have to be properly special, and it will have to have dropped the R56 engine in favour of something designed wholly by BMW (rather than a Peugeot joint venture).
I must be lucky had a 2008 mcs had problem with death rattle but was fixed in 2009 no further problems for two years. Traded it in for a 2011 JCW no problems at all with the JCW BMW dealers are not always that good but tried a few until I found some good ones . Always been happy with my mini wouldn't have anything else
Mine won't be depreciating - a 2004 Mini Cooper in Chilli red 64k,new tyres and exhaust, unmarked paint, half leather, very clean - paid £1400 -downside - needs a clutch - so in view of all the gearbox horror stories I am replacing both. Will put 12 months Mot on it and will easily sell for £3000. You must remember whether buying through a dealer or other garage that 20% of the cost of the car is VAT which YOU loose straight away.

I remember way back in 2004 when I purchased my Cooper, brand new.
The salesman told me that 'Mini's hold their resale value better than any other car on the market'!
Seems that's not the case anymore!
They were much more in demand and fashionable then plus the 2nd hand market was not flooded with them. These days, with easy finance deals, less hype and buzz around the brand and a plentiful supply in the 2nd hand market, they hold their value no better than anything else.
