Muppet dinged my min

Some muppet dinged my cooper s on wed night. Was parked in car park outside house, sleepin on sofa when woken by my alarm going off. Looking out window i saw a van parked on my front bumper. Legged it downstairs and found the idiot. He's response "i dont know what happened it just rolled off" obviously never heard of a handbrake! he wasnt even in the van at time. Smashed my min in front and pushed it backwards into a tree! Insult to injury he then proceeded to give me false details insurance/name/ telephone no e.t.c. so now what. Take my advise all if some idiot dings your min kill them there and then dont take risks they deserve it anyway. On a lighter note considering what happened the car stood up to it damn well. Needs new front bumper n trims and paint on rear. Total damage £500. Old bill no help as usual insurance doing there stuff but now my premium is going to go up isnt it. All while sleeping on sofa. From now on i sleep in car, engine running ready to avoid the next muppet. Someone cheer me up please!

Got Reg number and told rozzers. They said that as i didnt report within 24Hrs i am commiting an offence. This is england, it sucks. Reported anyway id like to see them get me up in court for someone hitting my car while i wasnt even in it and giving me false details. The above gives me good reason to suspect that the old bill wont be much help to me here so taking actions of my own. He wont be getting a free pass!

I surprised that the police aren't helping. I realise it may be difficult to find the guy, but what he's done is quite serious really and they should do everything they can to get him.

You really should have taken down his registration number, though. I guess you realise that now; hindsight is wonderful.

With the huge excesses on some policies, it's often not worth claiming. You've got to bear in mind how much more you'll be paying in insurance this year and in subsequent years and see if it is actually worth claiming.

That really does take the p155. Is it really the duty of the person who wasn't in the car at the time to report it? It's definitely the duty of Mr W. Van-Man, but is it really yours?

I'd also like to see them try to prosecute you.

You should get a crime reference number and keep enquiring as to what they're doing to solve the crime. You're entitled to get reports on what actions they're taking.

Armed with the registration number, they're really being slack if they don't do anything about it. I'd keep pressuring them.

You should be able to claim on his insurance regardless, I would have thought. You just need to find out who he's insured with.

I just hope he is insured! also as the other guy said it means my premium will go up and i wasnt even there. Insurance co's are pants they got us by the balls. Apparently i should hear from bill within the week. I just hope the news is good. havent had any yet since it happened. bill say its up to my insurance to sort out but as you say you would have thought they would be concerned about this guy giving false details. besides what the hell am i paying road tax, coucil tax, income tax, tax on the car price, petrol tax, fag n booze tax for? grrrrrr!

I'm not. They wouldn't have the man power!

Much too ( ) busy sitting on deserted straight dual tracks trying to catch someone doing 3mph over the limit!

When you want them to do "real" police work, they can't be bothered!! (talking from experience here!! )

I know what you're saying. Have you noticed the other police activity when the roads are slightly wet, or visibility is reduced? They'll drive along the motorway at about 50 MPH and everyone will bunch up behind them because they have a fear of overtaking police cars.

It's always perplexed me why the police are involved in basic speed checking at all. Wouldn't it be better to have cheaper people to do this than qualified officers?

I had my bike nicked when I was at university. I don't think they did anything apart from to write me a letter confirming that I'd reported the crime. I realise that there's a limit to what they can do in these circumstances, but when they've got the number plate of the guy's van, they don't really have to go to much effort to bring him to book.

I suppose the guy could deny all knowledge of the incident and claim mistaken identity, but if he has damage to his vehicle then there's surely some police work to be done.

Thanks to an unknown photographer we have gotten a picture of the illusive Muppet, Beeker. Known for smashing Minis in the car park. If you know the whereabouts of this menace please contact the local police.

Your insurance should not go up if it was his fault and your insurance company gets the money out of his insurance company to pay for it.

Make sure you claim back your uninsured losses like excess, and anyhthing else you need to pay for as a result of what happened. You should have uninsured loss cover help with your policy. It's called legal protecxtion or something.

Tip of the week.

I keep a diposable camera in the glove box, just for incidents like this. It really works. You will have all the proof you need for the police and insurance when you have pictures.

I keep my camera in the car all the time anyway. Thankfully, I haven't had to take pictures of anything more than the odd nice bit of scenery.

Unfortunatly thats not the case. If the plonker isn't insured its you who will lose your no claims. The insurance companies say that the money has to come from somewhere.

How do you get it back if the muppet is not insured ?, well you need to take them to court and get it back that way. Normally this is will cost you, but if you win can reclaim the costs. If you have legal protection the insurance company will do this for you, but you will still lose your no claims if the muppet si not insured.

Remember that if muppet is not insured then muppet is generally hard up, so don't expect money back immeditely.

Moral ?, the laws in UK about insuring cars are rubbish, the guy might get a small fine and maybe a couple points but thats it.

Sorry but this has happened to me. I was rear ended by White Van Man 6 years ago, £3400 damage which my insurance company paid for, I lost my no claims, WVM got away with 3 points and £400 fine.

Anyway rant over

Not quite. He said that WVM got away with three points and a £400 fine. WVM is a reference to "white van man", which is a common phrase over here.

LOL! You missed it. Go into the off-topic and banter section and look for a post entitled "Meryy Christmas". We all make mistakes.

I was always taught to ask for the other person's license + registration and copy down the info from there. That way, you make sure you get the correct info.

In the UK, you're not obliged to carry your license or registration with you. It's only recently that photographic licenses were introduced and it's only if you've moved house recently that you'll have one of these. Even then, you don't have to carry it and if you're a lying little s41t3 like White Van Man, you just claim not to have any ID on you.
