Thumbs up MINI gets good/best pick in IIHS 40MPH offset crash test

http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle_rat.../html/0222.htm

The same unit that gave the MINI a marginal bumper rating gave it a good/best pick on the nasty 40MPH offset crash test.

Good show.

My insurance costs might go up to keep my bumpers prisine, but the Mini will ultimately do a great job of protecting me.

Thats what counts, as far as I am concerned.

Impressive. I also like that it's safer than some of the other cars that I was considering, specifically the Golf and Jetta.

Another crash test result

Just saw another story on CNN on those wacky folks at the insurance safety center. This time it was the 40 mph crash test. The MINI Cooper got a rating of good for protecting the passenger compartment. Good is apparently the highest rating and if I understood the story correctly the MINI was their safety pick of its automobile size category. Other top cars were the A4, Corolla, Aero and Accord. On a personal note it was rather painful watching them smash up that Cooper on camera since it looked exactly like mine.

I haven't read any methodology on their testing procedures, but surely that can't be the same MINI that they banged into objects at 5 mph, can it?

I mean they wouldn't be so negligent do the 5 mph 'tests', repair the car and then do the 40 mph test, would they?

Hmmmm...both of them were red/white Coopers.....

It's fantastic news for safety, but also good for insurance costs. It is the same insurance industry board doing these ratings as well. Bumper damages are most common, but head trauma injuries or chopped-off legs have to be pretty expensive.

It's weird that CNN keeps showing the MINI. I guess because of its size everyone is curious how it does in a crash.

On order: Cooper. Chili red/black. Black bonnet stripes. Rally lights. Fog. DSC. Tartan red interior with anthracite.

Nope - all of the tests should be with new cars. In one of the shots that they had on the Dateline NBC segment they show a fleet of red/white Coopers - all destined to be junk...

As scottwkurth said right off dealers lots. IIHS buys the cars with their own money, cars not provided by manufactures. Kinda makes you wonder about the bumper test car, who fixed it, or any of these bumper test cars. Include markup?

Was wondering when these facts would come to light.

A saleswoman @ MINI dealership here in T.O. got T-boned a week ago. The offending driver hit her doing 70kph (running a red-light).
Result:
MCS was totaled, but she's fine - Not so much as a scratch. She got out and couldn't believe what the car looked like.

MINI's a little ROCK!

I was studying in my room today when my mom started yelling from downstairs, come down come down come down! And i come down and she's like in a minute they are going to show the cooper tests, lets see how they do! Her expectations are that it's not going to hold up too well since its so incredibly tiny, but i told her i bet it did great. The local news came on and they showed the interview with the man saying the mini's front end is very rigid and the passenger compartment is even MORE rigid. That is apparently the reason for why it even bounces to the side like that. I am proud of the test results, and those tests were pretty brutal! 40mph is FAST! Good going bmw/mini!

I've never wanted to run head-on into a wall so much in my life! GO MINI!!

I didn't see any of the TV spots, but I love hearing about how safe it is. My friend likes the car but doesn't like riding in it because it's too small and "unsafe". He could be talking about the driver but now I've got backup.

So if they crash all those cars, can I get cheap parts? Who do I contact?
