Question Any Canadians able to haggle the purchase price?

I really would like a Mini Cooper S this coming summer, and it will be my first car. I was wondering if any Canadians have had their prices negotiated to a lower amount. I know it's in high demand, so any success stories?

I was thinking of going to Mini Markham or Mini Oakville. Any suggestions?

Thanks - first timer here.

I will tell you off hand that both

Mini Oakville
Mini Dhuram
and MIni TOornto will probably not take anything off the price.

THye are the busiest of the dealers.. especially oakville.

Mini Waterloo I hear has some on the lot.. look at their website.

Re: Any Canadians able to haggle the purchase price?

Now that 2003 MINIs are out. 2002s on their lots are on sale. Not really sure about S though, I was told by my friend who went to MINI Markham a couple of weeks ago that they knocked $3000 off the MSRP of 2002 Coopers. You'll have better chance of having discount when you are buying previous year model on their lot if they still have any 2002s left this coming summer (which I doubt especially MCS)?

Not one red cent came off. I paid exactly MSRP on my 2003 MCS, though I was told at the time that there was a bit of leeway on leftover 2002 models.

your best bet is to go for a 2002 if you want a discount... besides its the exact same car

If you check out https://www.dlsaccelerator.com/webas...sheet_pics.asp you'll see that unfortunately for you, the S's on the lot are all 2003's so you won't get the previous model year discount. Still, they ARE on the lot so maybe you could still get something. There is a small boatload of 2002 Coopers there and someone has already traded their 2002 chili red launch edition for something else as one with almost 20K km on it is at the bottom of the page.

MINI Waterloo is a nice dealership. My only relationship is as a satisfied customer.

Rather than try to negotiate money off, I negotiated for extra junk. Got a couple of oil filters, rubber floor mats and touch up paint thrown in. It's certainly easier once you remind the dealer of the customer satisfaction survey

I've dealt with Budds (MINI Oakville) for a few years now and always found them good to deal with.

They did the work on my Z3 quickly and effectively and I like the atmosphere there. Drop by for a car wash on Saturday and the sales/service guys will shoot the breeze about cars etc. the technicians are almost all pretty young and enthusiasts so you can get decent recommendations from them on what to do in a particular situation which isn't pure BMW dogma.

I agree with the others on this thread that your only chance of a deal is on a 2002 Cooper. Keep saving - the S is worth it!

I paid exactly MRSP. I bought off the lot and the car I got had way more stuff than I wanted (I'm happy with that now though. The dealer has been great, but absoutely inflexable over the price. I know that there are a dozen coopers on the lot going cheap right now. I think that that Richmond MINI has a bunch of MCS too
In the middle of next year I think you'll have a hard time getting a discount.

No price deals in Montreal and Laval... Only on demo cars... and i don't suggest buying those...

You might have deals on '02 cars, but i doubt theres some "S" available...

I'll second this opinion. Though my MCS is the first car I've bought from Budds/MINI Oakville, my father has purchased two cars and my uncle about a dozen from that dealership. I've had good experiences dealing with Brad Trott especially; I don't hesitate to recommend that you ask to see him.

And yes, go for the MCS. You can never have too much power.

I was getting the 15k service done on my MINI today. All the 2002 coopers had a large $1000 rebate sign in the front window.Didn't ask the sales people for details.Might be a good time for those Canucks that have been sitting on the sidelines to make a visit to a dealer

I paid exactly MSRP plus the price of rubber floor mats $100 and the price for bonnet stripes.

anyone tried autobrokers? normally i do not recommend them especially if you want to get a mini and the entire mini experience, but if you are trying to save a few hundred bucks or so, i am sure these guys can get a car from BMW Canada. one guy i know is a used car dealer/broker and he order a few mini's before the official launch and he got the car the same time as the MINI dealers.

btw, you will not have luck getting any discount in the west coast either. 2002's yes. 2003's no.

and the freaking PDI is $1295 CDN.

What exactly is PDI? Do dealers break down the exact things that make it up? Sounds like a bleepin' cash grab that is hidden from the customer. This is separate from freight, I assume.

I beleive that PDI is pre-delivery inspection the amount that they charge is rape. If the auto manfacture did there job properly at the factory we would not have to have PDI.

The freight and PDI charges were combined on my invoice. A freight charge from the UK is acceptable but the amount they charge to pull off the plastic and clean the car is outrageous when I got mine I didn't think they'd negotiate -- perhaps now they will. In Canada they can still keep it off the MSRP until you actually do the final finances unlike in the USA where they force them to include it in the MSRP.

Like others, B-K Motors now has discounts on remaining 2002's. See www.miniwaterloo.ca for details. Only 5-speed Coopers, not CVTs or MCSes.

Pre Delivery Inspection is alot more than just "peeling the plastic off". This is some of what happens to your car before you get it:

Vehicle Inspection:
- remove wrap guard, inspect for transport damage
- remove shipping spacers from suspension
- fuse box installation/install fuses
- set clock(hey it has to be done...)
- program radio, check operation
- program OBC, check operation
- torque wheel bolts. check air pressure(including spare)
- replace transport wipers, check wiper/washer system
- check all fluid levels
- inspect jack, wheel wrench, tool kit complete, spare
- maintain battery voltage
- check window sunroof and toll function
- check central locking system
- install antenna
- install hub covers
- check engine oil for gas dilution(change if necessary)
- check vehicle diagnostics and fix any codes
- check for fluid leaks and fix if necessary
- reset service indicator
- under car inspection for damage and looseness
- perform any service campaigns

Road Test:
- interior/exterior light check
- program car key memory to customer spec.
- check guages, warning lights, horn
- check engine operation
- check clutch operation
- check transmission, ignition switch, EH function selector
- PDC operation
- ABS/DSC systems
- steering alignment
- foot and parking brakes
- handling and wheel balance
- absense of rattles, squeaks and wind noise
- heater, ac and rear defroster
- cruise control operation
- radio, cd player, changer
- speaker and fader options
- OBC/MID functions
- check operation of any MINI options
- check mirror function
- check seats, headrests, steering wheel
- read out diagnostics system
- install plates
- check and adjust doors, hatch, hood
- final check on battery voltage

Detail:
- remove all shipping wax(not as easy as you think)
- clean car exterior and interior
- polish, buff and wax exterior
- detail exterior plastics
- clean all glass inside and out
- full engine detail and wheel detail
(how much do you pay a detailer to do a FULL inside and out detail later on, which is what you are getting done here.)

This isn't to harp on anyone, just showing you that there are a lot of steps involved with making your car perfect when you pick it up. All of the tasks, as mundane as some sound, do take up time and are performed on every car by a technician and the detail staff. They have to get paid to do this and it does take many hours to do all this. Pricey? Perhaps a little...neseccary? Definately.

Just a little insight "behind the scenes". All this is done while I the salesperson sit and eat donuts and surf on MINI2.com(or play our new PS2 with the MINI Rally game on our 20" plasma TV :P ).....heh heh. Actually I have to run around and make sure all the paperwork is getting done(think of all the sales that go on here everyday!) and that the car is going through everything on schedule as I want your car to be perfect as much as you do! But that is another long winded story...

What's ironic is that this hadn't been done when I came to pickup my Cooper at your dealership. Fortunately my salesperson sorted it all out, so no harm done.

Moral of the story? Bring along someone to go through the above checklist - you as the proud new owner will be too excited to.

It was kinda hopeless to bargain down the price, but I did bargain for some free items, such as floor mats and a Mini keychain! BOO YA!
