Mini One 2005 -alternator problems?

Hi there i'm new to this website but hoping to find some help about my mini one.

A couple of days ago my Mini One 2005, petrol, had a weird sound coming from the bonnet/wheel. I drove it for another couple of days and the sound then turned to what i can only describe as 'loose tarmac chippings up in my wheels?'
Anyway about 5 mins after that, smoke started coming out and my heater STOPPED blowing warm air out -as if the heater went? It blew out cold air and i immediately pulled over.

I had to get my father to come and get me and then the car wouldn't turn back on. After 20 mins we then got it to start as it was on a bit of a hill. We drove it for about 2 miles and then the engine temp started to rise and then smoke came out of the car again. We had to pull over. We tried it 5 mins later and it wouldn't turn on and the battery light flashed. We got a recovery truck and its now at the mechanics.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

-loud sound for 2-3 days
-fan stopped working
-steering was stiff
-smoke from car
-battery light flashed and car wouldn't start

Once you heard the weird sounds you really should have had the problem diagnosed straight away, driving on for a couple of days could have caused more damage.....

The cold heater suggests you lost coolant due to engine overheating was the level low below minimum in header tank?

The smoke, heavy steering and battery light suggests alternator and or power steering pump problems. A fault with either can kill the battery and stop all the electrical items functioning needed on a modern car. Difficult to diagnose without seeing the car so let us know what the garage find as it helps others in future.

Rip alternator

Pick up a alternator from a local breaker spare yard.
