You should see the size of the pot hole in NYC

I'd suggest that you send a copy of the photo to the local highways authority and remind them of their duties under the Highways Act.

You wonder why people in NYC drive around in old autos or large SUVs. Poor road conditions. I would never take my Mini there. I drove my tractor trailer through NYC a week before Christmas and could not believe how poor the road conditions were. Has the people of New York City stop paying taxes, or are they planning that if they ignore the situation that it will go away.

To which they'll reply to with a preprinted letter saying Dear sir or madam, thank you for imforming us there is a large hole in the road that we already know, obvioulsy you can imagine being such a large.... yaddah yaddah yaddah... take your letter seriouly... etc etc!

MiniMatt wrote his first mini off due to a pot hole, which reminds me mean to ask him how his insurance went on with it.

Well if its done damage which has been caused as a direct result by an ill maintained road then the Authority might take a letter before action rather more seriously. Its only because everyone seems to think that their letter won't be taken seriously that nobody ever contacts their Local Authority or the Highways Authority and reports these defects.

Just a thought.

Here in Canada, we would call that a "trainee pothole". One day it would hope to graduate to a full-sized pothole, capable of causing real damage to rims, alignment and power steering fans.

I think the overwhelming point is just how much the motorist in the UK, and indeed across the world is had, it costs a fortune to insure the car, to fill it up with petrol, buy the car and then tax it, with none of that money going towards road repairs.

Mini Cruisers pot hole looks like the erosion of a road repair.

In the UK we have the absurd situation that utility companies can dig up the road at will on the pretext of emergency repairs and these repairs need only be warranted for 2 years. All too often these repairs disintegrate at the first sign of bad weather. Councils invariably never call utility companies to account - it's far quicker to patch it themselves.

The utility companies complain that it would increase the cost of services to end-users if they have to take greater responsibility for their repairs/mistakes/shoddy workmanship. Frankly, I don't give 2 hoots if Mr-Cable-TV-Trash-Viewer has to pay an extra 50p a month.

In addition utility companies should be discouraged from placing manhole covers, inspection covers and stopcocks directly in the path of tyre tracks, just because that's the length of the pipe and it's cheaper not to cut it/lengthen it.

There is just one moon and one golden sun; And a smile mean friendship to ev'ryone; Through the mountains divide, and the oceans are wide; It's a small world after all.

Exactly! Square corners, rectangular pattern overall. Here in the US and in So. Cal. Land-of-Lawyers I think a claim against the local authorities could even be made.

I have seen bigger and nastier potholes, but this one looks like it was rather stealth in poor lighting/weather.

I hot a pretty big pothole today, but like you luckily I wasn't going too fast. There are some ridiculous potholes in Newcastle.

I've often wondered if part of the allure of Sportless Futility Vehicles lies in the fact that they're pretty much unfazed by potholes.

As our infrastructure degrades and road repairs become a lower priority in municipal budgets, I can see how a vehicle with lots of ground clearance, soft suspension and very tall tire profiles could become the transport of choice.

Even though I count myself as a firm loather of SFVs, I can see the attraction they'd have for those who regularly drive on poorly maintained surfaces.

That's a piece of flat road compared to the crater i hit last August!

Some advice: get photos of the hole before telling the council (otherwise they'll fill it within hours of your phone call) then you have photographic evidence.

Research the law as to what they are liable for. For example, if someone has previously reported the hole, and the havent mended it, then they are liable.

Dont expect much of a response, i've had to chase my case loads, but it is going through (my car was completely written off) But i keep pestering them!

I report all hole i see now, then i know that they are liable if they havent mended them within a certain time (6 weeks i think)

What's this road tax stuff we pay for anyway?????
