how reliable are older minis?

Hi guys,
so i am debating at the moment whether to buy a brand spanking new mini on finance, or just to use my 3000 to buy an older one.
What i want to know is, is there any point in me buying an 03/04 plate mini?
I currently have a ford ka 02 plate, and i really don't wanna trade in for a more expensive car that will not be as reliable. I would like the car to last 5/6 years before dying, is this unreasonable?
also, what repair bills can i expect?
as always, any responses are greatly appreciated.

The transmissions in 1st Gen Cooper and One models had problems ... manual (Midlands) transmission in builds prior to July 2004 and automatic (CVT) transmission in all years.

The power steering pump in all models built prior to February 2005 also had problems.

My friend has an early one, and its very reliable, unless it breaks down, reliable in between the breakdowns shall we say, mind you he never looks at thing and his bucket hasnt ever been used, its brand new with the stickers on still.
You have to wait until the fish and chip wrappers get out before you can get in, its got the rat look to it, er and so has he.

thank you for the messages guys. so do you think i should look into finance and invest in an 05/06 one? also, does mileage matter on minis? i know some have minis that have been going for 200,000+ miles, but i'm guessing they've had these since new?

Hi ya

Most important thing is service history and a record of all work done make shore it lines up.
If you are un shore of what to look at on the car the AA, RAC can do an inspection and HPI check.
TBH they are a good car if there looked after all cars have problem, just take your time don't rush in to anything.

The minis come with so many different configurations (options) try to get the biggest spec you can, my advice is stay away from Harman Kardon stereo don't get me wrong there good but the amps are always going and are a lot to replace. And as said before anything after July 2004 is ok :-)

Everyone here willing to help so just ask good luck

See my reply to 'Looking to buy my first mini' a bit further up for the costs I've had since I had my '05 mini convertible.
