Returning to Minis-R56 Cooper s reliability?

H-after 3 years without a Mini we're starting to look for a Cooper S-probably something up to 3 years old or possibly, if we can stretch to it a 2014 Mini but not the S model.

Having read some forums seems to be quite a bit about reliability problems with the R56 Cooper S, costly gearbox faults, timing chain issues (sometimes causing engine failure)-which is putting us off slightly!

Any feedback from existing owners?

I guess we could just get a really good warranty but just want a reliable car (and fun!)

Thanks

Go for the later R56 S with the (Prince) N18 engine.
The earlier N14 engines were riddled with faults, certainly in my experience.

I think the N18 engine was introduced in March 2010 production for the UK. For the US market it was the 2011 model year. JCW models didn't get the N18 until around July 2012.
