Smile Questions RE: Secondhand Mini purchase

Dear All,

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read this.

Basically Im looking at buying a petrol engine Mini, probably a 2007+ model Clubman (maybe cooper S probably cooper) with a maximum of 70k miles.

Unfortunately I have had (in the past year) horrendous luck with my cars. My (new to me) RAV4 failed its MOT on a variety of undiagnosed and unnoticed issues (it ran absolutely fine..) that were quoted to be more expensive to fix than the value of the car and resulted in me losing 2.5k and now the gearbox in my partners Audi has packed up.

All of this spurned me to read up on my potential new investment and I quickly discovered a widely reported issue with the timing chains in some models. Upon reading some of the horror stories on this and other forums, my allusions to BMW reliability were quickly called into question and so now I ask you: Is there an outstanding issue with the cam chain in some minis? If so, are these particular to a specific engine? Someone posted about some of the timing chains being manufacturered by 2 different companies and that one was slightly longer.. anyone care to comment?

I appreciate that searching for reliability issues on the internet is a bit like trying to self diagnose using WebMD, however its all Ive got.

I also understand that, owing to their renowned handling and youthful appeal, that Minis are (arguably) more prone to having been driven aggressively than, for example, a Volvo. I certainly hope that this is a possible explanation to the previously noted cam chain issue.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Kind Regards

Rob.

Go on a forum and you'll run away as people go to them to get help, those with no need can't be counted to put problems in to perspective.

For peace of mind when you find a car you want get an AA or RAC inspection, any reputable garage will not object.

Firstly, thanks for your reply. Secondly, is there any particular version of the mini petrol engine that is more reliable than another?

I've pretty much convinced myself that a Cooper rather than Cooper S would be more sensible given the likelihood that a MCS will have been drive more aggressively coupled with the fact that i'm not going for a particularly low mileage model.

I have to drive my wife's Cooper harder than my JCW to get any decent performance out of it so, in some respects, the S could be seen as a better bet as it would be less stressed on a day to day basis.

Not all S or JCW owners will thrash them to death.
