Buying secondhand - sounds like a dump-valve is fitted.

Hi all,

Been away from Mini for a couple of years (used to have a pepper white MCS R53 from late 2003).

We've been looking at a couple of R56's and the one that's favourite sounds like it's got a dump valve fitted to it by a previous owner. Doesn't really look the sort of car that someone would fit one to but nonetheless, the noise is very apparent and on comparison to another same age MCS, the "p'tessss" is virtually none existent on the that one.

My question is, any way of easily removing said dump valve (I know nothing of such things) or could it be something else (problem?) that's causing the noise?

The added dump value noise might from an different induction kit fitted to it or it has different air filter panel in the air box

I believe there is even a speaker system you can fit under the bonnet that makes the dump valve sound when you change gear, but why you need that noise is beyond me, sounds like the cars doing a fart!

Can't you just ask if it's got a dump valve - either the previous owner or the garage selling it?

Surely a decent mechanic could tell you - besides, it would be normal to have the car examined before buying it.

You sure there isn't an induction kit fitted as AMAUTOS7 said as i have a K&N Typhoon kit fitted to my mini and it sounds similar to a dump valve, the trick is to listen as to whether the noise is sounding when you press the accelerator or when you actually change gear.
