DIY catalytic coverter questions

Hello all, i have a bit of an issue and need help!
My 2004 mini cooper s when i purchased it came without a catalytic converter. For whatever reason the previous owner decided to take it off and i did not know this when i bought it. Long story short, i have contacted him and he is going to send me the old catalytic converter. Right now on the vehicle there is just a metal pipe welded in its place. Does this sound like a job that could be done outside of a shop? what i mean is could i do it by myself and how hard would it be. Thanks in advance everyone
