Angry Holy Shattering Sunroofs!

2007 Cooper S - Hardtop with the double pano sunroofs.

Driving on a Texas highway this morning at about 8:30 - temp was no more than 85 degrees - light traffic.

Heard a loud boom and Immediately thought it was a close gun fire.

Rained on by tiny shards of glass. The sunscreen was pulled forward and caught all major shattered pieces.

Forward sunroof had exploded without being struck. Looks as if it was punched by air FROM WITHIN.

Dealer service was quick to quote $600 for both sunroofs (tho only front one is damaged). I'm guessing this is to replace the defective glass before any further issues occur. Service manager tried to explain the problem as a rock or debris. Not buying it. He recommended I call Mini North America to report and ask for replacement. Doing that on the phone now.

This is a HUGE safety hazard, especially with the sun screen back as I usually have it. Should be in instant recall before a driver causes and accident because of injury or a baby or child is seriously injured in the back seat. As for me, still picking glass out of my hair and face/neck. God only knows how long I'll be finding pieces in the car. Not cool, Mini.

Most likely to be as a result of a strike, even if not at the time of breaking.

It can break due to a scratch in the surface of the glass, this creates a stress point which can cause a toughened glass to shatter without warning over a period of time.
How can it get scratched on the roof you might ask, well its quite easy to catch it with a diamond ring say when youre cleaning it without actually realising it, the rotary car wash brushes do it no favours either as they collect grit over a period of time, thats why a car thats taken through one regularly looks like its been clean with a Brillo pad in time.

In the UK, I'd try to source a second hand replacement from a car breakers......not sure if you will be able to do this in US as far fewer MINI's on your roads.
