| MINI2 Regular | Running in First let me appologise if this has been covered (i did a search but found nowt) What have you lot done about a 'run in' period? What do BMW say about this? I've had two brand new bikes in the last 3 yrs and rode them hard from day one. The upside was i had bikes with loose, fast engines and no reliability issues at all. I've heard a story of a guy with a cooper who basically drove it from day one, and his was quicker than a modified one! Opinions pls???? After all, what is a warreny for?? (Engines are bench tested b4 assembly) ![]() |

Offline | Re: Hmmmm Here you go then ! I think you should follow the manufacturers guidelines. My car was noticeably tight for the first few hundred miles. Can't see the point is ripping the car from day one even if there is the slightest chance of damaging it or possibly affecting it's long term performance or reliability. I do not believe that the story you heard about someone's Cooper being faster than a modded one because he revved it from day one. ![]() Red/Black R56 Cooper |

Offline | run in I drove the car above 4500 revs and above 95 mph I could not resist it. I would say that it did this 10-20 percent of the time after it was picked up and upto its 1300 mile milestone. The car feels good and has no issues apart from the normal non engine related stuff. I also beleive the engines are tested before the are fitted although I do not know how rigorous this is. Do people really run in cars any more ? And is 4500 revs upto 95 mph running in ?? adios CHILLI RED, CHILLI PACK, MAGNEX & PIPERCROSS BAGS OF FUN gone now but not forgotten, an s next time ? |

Offline | I don't think it matters this much these days. Build quality has come a long way and so has oil technology. This subject has been discussed before many times. I am surprised however, at the number of people who will follow the manufacturers instructions exactly for the break-in period but will still insist on changing the oil before the first service! ![]() 260909 ![]() |

Offline | There are two clear schools of thought the first is to follow the manufacturers guidelines and not intentionally flog the car just to let everything bed in, although it is very tempting during the first 1,300 to start to use the performance. Luckily I did 1,300 miles in less than a month...but I've known people take an age to get to that mark..which must make driving pretty frustrating! The second school of thought is drive it like you'll always drive it! Regards Christopher |

Offline | Dark MINI, I think as long as you don't drive the car like a complete hooligan then you're be alright driving it hard right from the start. Personally I followed the run in guidelines, if only to let the tyres bed in as much as anything. Which is properly a point worth making. Regards Christopher |
