My wifes R55 2008 Cooper D Clubman averages 58MPG and I have a 2004 R50 Cooper (petrol) which when driving around the doors averages 35 - 37 MPG. On long runs I easily get 44MPG out of my R50. I have the R50 with the supposedly dodgy box but its perfect and original.
In July 2004 the R50's were face lifted and fitted with the Getrag gearbox which are stronger than the Midland ones and less prone to failure. £3000 should get you a facelift R50 with the better box but you may struggle to get a decent diesel at that money
Yeah I'm in the UK. The tax on my petrol Cooper is £180 and the tax on the Clubby is £20 per year
