story of a salesman that loss two grand

what did my salesman got himself into.

it all started when i ordered my mini one back in september 2002. all was fine until he started bull****ing to me. things like ' you'll get a full tank of petrol', 'you'll get to choose a present from the showroom up to a value of £50', the list goe's on. obviously i was chuffed to bits, and so was my misses. the car was due on march the 1st and Mr salesman said he would call me two weeks beforehand so i can choose a number plate and style of it and any other stuff. well i got no phone call and just waited. come the week it was due and i decided to pop in to see him. to my shock, he claims i wont be getting my car on the 1st and dont know when. my pulse hit 3 figures and my mouth went into *@~"+*# mode.
Anyway, after Mr salesman made a call on the red phone, he managed to find out that the car was ready and waiting.
I started to doubt the service of BMW. and i was right.
March the 1st. i was all excited and went to the dealer, chuffed with the car but to my astonishment, there wasn't a full tank of juice. Mr salesman gave excuses and i thought none the less. then i ask for our present. well i should have know, all i got was a small bottle of champaigne, (for a doll house). More excuses and, well, i left it at that. didn't want my day spoilt.i realised he only sweetened me up for a sale. i felt like a mug.
Well just a few days ago, someone from BMW rang and asked me questions from a survey. stuff i had to rate 0-5. I got my revenge and downrated everything about the salesman
This morning i get a call from Mr salesman telling me that he had loss 2 grand because of my ratings.53% i believe, and asked if i would reconsider my choices. i did until he started bull*****ing again.he claims he tried to call me for two weeks (curtesy call). I laughed at him and said ' my mobile phone is on 247 everyday' and that i have 3 answer machines. not one message. and then he denied all the things he said about the freebies.
From that i told him where to go.
Petty as it all may seem but it's the principle of things.
All i say is what goe's around come's around. and honesty can pay dividends. Happy driving.

Ah, makes your heart bleed, doesn't it? We went into a dealer on 'S' launch day last year to take a good look and ask for a tesat drive. We got treated like rubbish by the salesman, he even suggested that we should pop back in 'a few weeks' once proper customers had been sorted out. Anyway, more fool him, we went to another dealership a few miles away, the saleslady there even managed to get us a launch day test drive (only 10 minutes, but they were fully booked). And we orderred there and then. 2 MCS's that is, not one!!! So matey boy lost out on 2 sales, his n hers Coopers 'S' with loads of spec, we spent £36k. And we both got gift packs, and were obviously treated kind of special. We still get birtday/christmas cards form the saleslady, and are kept well informed as to whats happening. Took delivery in December.

Good pay back....maybe a bit strong but he would have known that if he wasn't up to scratch then he'd loose out.
I wonder just how many other customers have told it like it is? I know I have been possibly nicer than what I should have been in the past when answering those questions.

I agree, except I say "What goes around comes around."

You should reconsider your stance, because without getting things in writing from the get-go you don't have much of a leg to stand on.

You're going to cost the salesperson $2k over some trinkets and $25 worth of gas (full tank from empty, premium gas). A better solution is to negotiate a savings on future purchases or a one-time discount on a big ticket item. Something like that.

I've been "working with" my dealer for just about a year now. I got one of the first MCSs delivered to San Francisco, I smiled as I wrote the check including $3k above MSRP, and since then they've given me nice discounts on purchases, and when I was misquoted an install charge for clear tail lights by a service rep who was sure of the quoted price, they held to their original quoted price and smiled all the way. I felt quilty even though I was in the right.

I will say this about *your* sales rep. It's not your business what you are costing the rep. His goal should be to make you happy, and I'm somewhat surprised to hear of your experience. I suppose it takes all types...of both customers *and* sales reps.

i bet MINI HQ would be interested in the fact that the salesman tried to get you to change your survey ratings.

Tough titty i say. If he gave poor service, he deserves a poor rating. Simple as. He made the promises - you didn't.

Does a salesman get all of 2 grand for a sale?

I must say for a MINI salesman that's money for old rope. The car sells itself. My salesman certainly didn't have to work too hard for his 2 grand. He did give me free tlc and free shortfall cover when he didn't really have to (I'm sure he knew he'd get the sale even if he didn't). He never promised me a free tank of petrol though - he pointed out that it was included in the 'on the road' costs. Cost me £30 if I remember.

Snap, but with a difference we went to LIND in MAIDSTONE for our test drive on launch day,but before he would allow us to test a cooper S the salesman wanted us to do the paperwork and pay a deposit before we had even driven it.

Hence we took our business elswhere.

I don't know this for sure but I suspect that the salesmans commission for the month/period was £2k, but normally with these things its based on number/value of sales and customer service. Fail on either target and no bonus.
I suspect to get 53% he had ****ed off more people than you..

My understanding is that MINI sales staff are not on commisssion but rather slary with a kicker if their ratingd are high i.e. 9 - 10.

My salesman was a wreck (I went from having no car in my name despite having put a deposit down (the first in the dealership - more than 1 year earlier) to having my name on 2!

When he was delivering my car he gave my kids hats/key rings etc and 'made sure' I was going to give him high marks.

I rated him lower than 9 but not punatively. he is no longer at the dealer so I guess i was not alone.

Shortfall cover is a fincancial service offered by MINI. Basically, if your car gets nicked or written off, MINI will make up the difference between what the insjurance company pays out and what the car was really worth.

Wow 2k

We have had salesman changed by the sales manager of the group all because we complained but the old salesman still rings to offer us a courtesy car on the original due date which is supposed to be next week but we won't be in the country . Now i can see why the old salesman rings us back even though we have a new one.... , lets wait and see what freebies we get else i'm sure we can drop his ratings...

I m not bad person and very reasonable but if I walk into a showroom with a 12.5k budget and walk out with near 16k mark i expect decent service and explanations of why our car is not coming on the day agreed when we signed...

but I love this site and very addicted and wait with gr8 hope of our cooper pooper.

very tempted to order an S with another decent dealer....

My company has a saying that puts things in perspective when we think costomers should be more understanding.

"Thier perception is our reality"

It is not the costomers responsibility to understand the ins and outs of the business, it is our responsibility to uphold our standards.

I thought it paid the difference between your insurance write-off value and the cost to replace with a new car.

So which dealership are you talking about then?

Some of these people just think short-term all the time. The few that don't just make their future sales easier when the customer comes back. Here's an example:

It'll be 3 years in July since I first did business with my preferred dealer. As is my normal practice I turned up the very first time dressed like s*** to see how they would deal with me. Was treated extremely well and the salesman sold me an M3. A few months later the same guy then sold me a 328 convertible. Five months down the line I went back to him and he sold me a 530 sport. Later on (yet again) the same guy then put me in touch with their Lexus operation and arranged for me to buy a GS300 sport.

Last year my original salesman decided to change departments and move away from sales. He made sure that whoever took over my business treated me properly. So I ordered my S last year from them. I have never had any issues either pre or post sales, but then my customer profile is distinctly different from the majority of their customers.

However, it just goes to show how much you can get from repeat business as opposed to doing it the hard way. A lot of car sales people I've dealt with only look at the short term - if my local dealer hadn't cheesed me off when I first approached them they would've had a substantial amount of business from me. Even when they had a second chance to impress they still didn't. I will approach them again towards the end of the year and will deliberately turn up dressed in 'workmen' clothes just as they are about to close.

Shamster, are you in the car business, or do you just like changing your car extremely frequently? I presume you're selling each car before buying the next. If not, you must have a seriously big garage!

That's pretty dumb, and you missed the point.

The MINI reps were overwhelmed. BFD. They help customers that deserve it. BFD,
