Where is the ding sound coming from?

I knew that our MINI would ding when the temperature drops below 3Celsius. But one time I was about to finish parking in a parking lot with my friend waiting there, my MINI gave me a "ding" sound and after I came out of the car, my friend asked me why is you car making that ding sound?? That time I didn't know what the ding sound is about until later I found the answer here. She was about at least 5-10 feet away so I think maybe the sound is not coming from the interior but from the exterior (e.g. engine)? Maybe to notify other drivers as well??

Did you leave your lights on? If your lights are left on your car will ding.

Or another idea is, if you turn off your ignition, and open the door before taking the key out, it will ding until the door is closed or the key is taken out.

Did you do either one? I don't believe the ding can come from outside the car.

The sound may well be coming from underneath the car, there is a fuel thing there that makes an incredible sound on some cars, mine included.

Actually it dinged (just once) before I parked my car i.e. it was still moving slowly towards the parking spot, so it shouldn't be the cases you mentioned.

Really scary. Can that be the origin of a new bed time story legend?
"Something under my car is dinging!"
