...well you'll have to wait until August!

Unofficial information (from my mate in BMW germany) says that internal testing of the TMC system in a mini is nearly complete; pesonally i dont believe this bit as it is in all new BMW's right now you just need to know how to get it going.

However - as of August this year there will be a software upgrade available that will activate the TMC option in Mini Sat Nav systems.

How much you ask? Well the upgrade is free!

BUT - you'll have to pay for the new map disk with the TMC codes on it! (unless you saw my post from the other week and managed to get a pre release copy) - guesstimate cost £100 - £150

So if you have got the map disk i suppose its speak to your dealer nicely and see if they can do the upgrade for you!

Its not great news but August isnt that far away and just think of all those sunny days in the meantime - you dont wanna be on the M25 anyway!!!

Not too sure how the nav works on the MINI, but if you can activate TMC (I have on my 3 series and I am guessing it is the same system) all you need is a kind dealer to sell you the disk for the 7 series (may ask you for a chassis number) this is already TMC enabled. this costs about £65 plus VAT.
Alternatively you can buy a TMC disk from VDO Dayton at 240 Euro's.

Its been deactivated in the mini HW - like i said it works in BMW's!

I bet BMW/MINI want to charge extra for enabling TMC even though it's installed already. I've got a VDO Dayton with TMC (£150 for the TMC box and another £150 for the map).

I did read somewhere that it would be cheaper for manufacturers to load every car produced with all options and to enable them on demand. If that happened, no doubt, someone like you would be happily hacking away!

the hardware is already in the mini nav drive as its the same as the BMW one. Its just that the HW level is lower than the level in BMW's hence no TMC!

HOWEVER - it needs a FM tuner to receive the TMC messages which I THINK is built in..... but it may be in the headunit so for those of us who have changed the headunit it may prove to be a problem, but I am unsure about this at this time

Again you are a legend... This is fantastic news! I cannot wait to get the TMC activated. Is there any way you could burn me a copy of the new 2003-1 TMC disc. My one is a VDO dayton 2002-1 TMC disc.

Just for your info: today I had a 2003/2 DVD in my hands. It's supplied with BMW/MINI DVD sat nav systems here in the Netherlands.

Stil am not sure whether it supports TMC on Mini's (as it does on Bimmers)

Our X5 has got Traffic Master built in but that simply works through the AV input of the TV screen and is operated by an independant control...

Not sure if it is the same system or what... It also got the bluetooth handsfree kit which is da bomb...

Nah this is different - if your X5 has Nav (presume it does) then if you use the map i posted here a while ago (please dont ask me to post it again!!!) you will get TMC automatically!

Interestingly enough I swapped my nav drive with one from an X5 to get TMC to work, however the car is quite clever! Even with the X5 drive in the mini I still got the mini logo and TMC was disabled. I put the mini nav drive in the X5 and got the BMW logo and TMC worked no problem!

This i suppose proves that TMC is disabled in the cars DC1 and the nav also asks the DC1 what kind of car it is so it can display the right logo!

Bloody clever i thought!

ohhh.... one last thing - if you downgrade your nav software to 3-1/50 then it displays the BMW logo and not the mini one..... but who would want that anyway!

Woodman, I am sorry but I am getting confused.

I have ordered the MINI sat nav. (car being build in week 23/2003) so I get the DVD system. Is my sat nav showing TMC (on the continent) yes or no ?

P.S. according the dealer it should support TMC. Saw the 2003/2 Europe DVD today

Sat nav and TMC in a mini are officially released sometime in August

Most european disks have TMC codes on them, check your your radio stations for which one broadcasts TMC messages

Are you hearing anything on the grapevine about when in August the disc maybe ready.

Also, I remember that you also got a TMC receiver from VDO Dayton I think. Will it be necessary to get an additional receiver or is the one that is built enough with the Boost stereo.

if someone has a dvd rewriter on thier pc then this could be a good money making opportunity, cos i think theres a lot of people who want one, but not for £150 odd quid! Ive got a provlem with my nav at the moment (unit doesnt come on until few seconds into drive), i was going to tell the dealer and get it replaced, but i think ill wait til august now and see if i can blag one with the TMC on.
