Sure your procedure works if you have access to the passenger door. When I park in my garage I can't open the passenger side door. I have to park over to the right as close as possible so I can get out of the driver's side.

Saying that...I don't have a problem with the procedure for locking the MINI. It probably will prevent me from locking the keys in the car, can't say I never will but it's highly improbable.
