Simple Question

I apologized if this has been discussed before. Is there any way to lock the doors after you've parked and removed the key without using the key?

I'm very used to turning off the car, putting my key in my purse and then locking the door using the switch. With my MINI, it seems that the switch doesn't work after I turn off the car and remove the key. Is this correct or is my switch bad?

I guess if this is how it is, I'm just going to have to create a new habit. Since I use a purse that is like a small, leather backpack it's a pain to to have to wait until after I get out of the car to stow my keys. I use that type of purse because it leaves my hands free to carry stuff. Now I'm carrying stuff while trying to lock my door then stow my key and then close up the purse.

As far as I know, there is no way to lock the MINI without having the key in your hand to either lock it using the key or by pressing the button on the fob.

Hope this helps.

What I do is, turn the car off and open my door, push the lock button on my key and then put it in my purse. The doors will remain locked when you get out of the car and close the door. Hope that helps.

i'm gonna have to try if this works on my car, sounds potentially dnagerous. i know for sure i can't lock my car using the fob while the driver's door is open. i can however lock the car using the fob while the passenger door or boot is open. when either is closed then the car locks fully.

in your situation you could end up opening your door, locking the car with button, putting your key in your purse, leave it on the passenger seat, get out and close your door. et voila, key's locked in.

I'm a guy, so no purse issue, but whenever getting out of a car with a remote locking key fob thingy, I always lock once I am outside of car with the remote, that way there's no way of locking the keys in.

Yeah, I haven't locked myself out of a car since I got one with a remote key.

[OK, guys, don't you secretly get tired of all that stuff in your pockets? There's keys, money, knives, that ball-bearing that you found and "knew" you knew where it went, last week's grocery receipt, an old ratty handkerchief, your Palm, a pen or a pencil, directions to Amy's, sunglasses, a cell phone, the screw driver to remind you to tighten that hinge on the front door screen, the URL to that new MINI parts place.... Maybe a purse isn't that bad an idea?]

I sure wish there was a way to lock the door when it's open. I'm often loading up my arms with stuff and wish there were a way to lock the door prior to egress so I don't have to stand around outside and fumble with the keys.

trick i use when carrying lotsof stuff is, leave it on the passenger seat, get out, walk around, open passenger door, lock car, put key in pocket, get stuff and push door closed.

Sure your procedure works if you have access to the passenger door. When I park in my garage I can't open the passenger side door. I have to park over to the right as close as possible so I can get out of the driver's side.

Saying that...I don't have a problem with the procedure for locking the MINI. It probably will prevent me from locking the keys in the car, can't say I never will but it's highly improbable.
