Offline | Hi All, I've just purchased the MINI Chrome (well looks more like brushed alloy really) handbrake grip. Anyone have any info on how to safely remove the old one and fit the new one? The tricky bit looks to be to remove the plastic gator bit from the existing knob. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks, KenL Red/Black R56 Cooper |

| MINI2 Global Moderator | Take the end bit off and there are a couple of clips which need to be lifted away from the handbrake itself so that the cover can slide off. The gaitor is held on with a small cable tie which isn't done up tight and you can just about edge it off the existing handbrake handle. Reverse procedure to refit. It's hard to explain, but once you attempt if you'll see what I mean ![]() the MINI has gone... |

Offline | Monsta, Thanks for your help. I tried and failed as I couldn't get the old one off. I managed to ease the gator bit off which as you say is held on with a cable tie. Could you please explain how to/where are the "couple of clips which need to be lifted away from the handbrake itself so that the cover can slide off" I've attached three pics of the new grip. The first 2 are of the rear end and the third is the bit at the front. Should the little bit at the back stay attached to the chrome bit or should they separate when trying to get it off? Thanks, KenL ps anyone else want to chip in please feel free. Red/Black R56 Cooper |

| MINI2 Global Moderator | After looking at my old handgrip, it seems there is only one clip at the front. I took a picture of it to show you want I mean. Arrow 1 points to the bit you need to lift up (use a small screwdriver) it will just look like a bit of plastic from the top. Arrow 2 shows the bit that clips down into the shaft. i.e. you need to lift it so that it clears the handbrake shaft. The whole thing should then slide forward. Yes take the end bit off first ![]() |

Offline | Thanks to Monsta's instructions I've fitted the handbrake. Managed to get the new one on OK but the cable clip that retains the gator at the back was done up too tight to get it over the new handbrake without risking ripping the material. I've just re-positioned the gator and it sits nicely. Might have a go at fitting another cable tie although it's fine for now. I'm very happy with the look and feel of it. Chrome may be nicer but the brushed look fits in well with the colour of the bright silver trim bits in the car. Cheers, KenL. Red/Black R56 Cooper |

Offline | Thanks to your instructions, I was able to put on the Brake Handle/Grip. Thank you. However, my experience was a little different. I was able to remove the front "cap". However, in my hand brake there were actually 3 clips at the front, not one. One clip was by itself and the other two were on the opposite side, next to one another. They were a bit tough to remove, though I was being careful not to damage them in case I needed to "chicken out" and put them back. However, the problem I had most was with: "The gaitor is held on with a small cable tie which isn't done up tight and you can just about edge it off the existing handbrake handle." I couldn't edge it off. So, I was a bit creative and was able to see the cable tie and cut it off altogether. Then when I was done putting the new chrome one on I ran a new cable tie and tucked it neatly back into place Thank you for your help. Tommy Molly2003 |
