Premium fuel or Boggo supermarket fuel?

I was advised by an elderly neighbour to use premium petrol when running older cars. I gave it a go today, filled up with momentum at Tesco.
To me it feels like as if the car responds better and runs nicer. I'm not sure whether this is psychological (as the tests conducted by automotive programs who've used BHP figures showed small variances on N/A engines would suggest).

What do you guys think? :) Do you feel a difference?

I dont know about 1gen Mini's but 2gen and especially S models must use premium.

Here is the gotchya, they will run on regular in a pinch.

2gens are high compression motors and need the octane.

Using a lower octane fuel the computer will back off performance and efficiency to prevent motor damage.

Doing so may actually cost you more in reduced fuel mileage than it would for the correct fuel!

I run my gen 1 Cooper S on super unleaded. I don't do big mileage so it makes sense in terms of pence per mile.

Does it run better on 98 Ron? It does feel smooth on acceleration than when I occasionly use 95 Ron.

I know my diesel Alfa much prefers premium diesel too!
