Sorry to learn of this.

Now, if the overheating situation was caused by the power steering fan fuse blowing causing the radiator fans to stop (as things are wired on the '02 MINIs) it's just one more incident showing how this is the Achilles heal of the earlier MINIs.

I asked my dealership service advisor if there was a retrofit fix for this wiring goof, and he called his contacts at MINIUSA. He told me that when he asked the question about a retrofit fix, there was a long silience on the other end, almost as if this was the dreaded question they get on a daily basis. The answer was that MINI does not plan on fixing this known flaw.

So, if the power steering fuse blowing turns out to be the cause of your car's problem, please make a huge stink as to why MINIUSA refuses to prevent the problem before it occurs!

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, JCW kit .

MM/MP, sorry to hear about your overheating problems . Hopefully it will only be the same (relatively minor) problem as DaCrema's DaMINI - power steering fan fuse. You'll be motoring again in no time!

Bruce - It certainly appears that this is exactly what happened to my car and a few others in the past week (just in our area). I will have two questions for MINI USA; 1) Why not fix this before it happens and 2) Does the fix prevent this from happening again and if not, why not?

John - Is there any indication that the fuse blew because something got stuck in the power steering fan? Or, are you just being overly cautious? In other words, is the skid plate going to prevent a repeat?

Well, perhaps it's time to consider petitioning MINIUSA to fix this KNOWN FLAW. It's the least they can do.

After all, it's a huge hassle if this happens while the car is under warrantly, but if this happens post-warranty it could literally mean thousands and thousands of dollars (or pounds or euros) out of the owner's pocket to fix or replace an engine damaged or ruined by overheating. Overheating that could easily be prevented I might add.

Just watch out for warped cylinder heads - it'll show up as a blown head gasket - but if it does - have the mechanic check the head.

First - Dom, it is understood quite well here int he U.S.A that DARK SILVER w/ BLACK TOP RULES!!! Paddy, I hope you see this...

Now that I got that off my chest I'll comment on the pic MP just posted. You can see from looking at that man's bum that he is quite a hard worker (that means he is covered in dirt, grease, and grime) Thankfully he did not sit in my car at any time - That would have been the biggest disaster of the day

Hope to hear from the dealer today and be back in the saddle soon!

No, but I did not get to talk to the people that did the work or the service advisor. I made arraignments to pick up the car after I got off work.

I am likely being overly cautious. In other forums I have read posts from people whose opinion I value talking about how exposed the fan is(Bartnic and others). We had a bad winter. I think some slush or something else might have found its way up into the power steering fan. I will do what I can for the time being to prevent a reoccurrence.

To rewire the fans so they are on different circuit will require a wiring harness change. I am not so sure I want to go down that road. If the wiring and/or connectors are stressed when the new harness is installed there is the opportunity for many more problems to crop up. Please do not misunderstand me, I would like to see a fix, but I can understand why MINI is being slow to unravel this particular knot.

I was out to Costco today, and went by Sterling and said hello to Scooter and your car.

Mine did it too. Mine overheated in heavy stop/go traffic. Luckily, I happened to look over and saw the high temp red light. I pulled out of traffic and cruised down a side road where 2 minutes later the temp fell rapidly to normal (huh..?). I wish there was a temp chime. I got the luxury of running it all weekend too (eek). I schelduled the appoinment on Friday for next available on Monday morning (overheated late PM , Thursday). Having not bought from the local dealer, it was nil on a loaner. The MINI held up good all weekend though.

Service just called and mentioned the Auxillary Fan went out as a result of the fuse. They have a unit ready (oh really...) to put in.

When I get it back I'm going to put it on a jack and check this aux fan thing out. A little custom wire grill may be next to be installed...

Well I'm considering the Moss Motors skid plate. The primary reason I don't like that option is the added weight to the front of the car (I think about 25 lbs.). Please let us know what you do with the wire mesh fix. Might be a lighter and less expensive alternative.
