Head scratcher is the friend we were visiting. I think he felt bad that it happened at his house (Maybe I'll throw some guilt his way and get a new exhaust out of him ) Well, he fixed a dandy BBQ later so I'll let him off the hook

Regarding this fuse...

Where is it located? If it's turning out to be such a problem, shouldn't there be a FAQ that deals with checking and replacement of the fuse?

Just curious...and hoping my MINI will be troublefree.

I don't know the entire story yet but the fuse going is just a symtom. The reason it goes is due to a failure in the electric fan that cools the power steering motor. If were just a fuse none of us would be making trips to the dealer.

The fuse is located in the engine-bay fusebox, and looks like one of these:

They're about $2 (USD) apiece (they're a special size)

I got this for $1.49 at the local electronics store. It had one more row of wires on either side that were specially bent for mounting but I trimmed them off and attached it with pop rivets.

The Beast is back home safe and sound. The dealer replaced the power steering cooling fan and gave her a good washing. All is peaceful in the mini world of MP & MM

Thanks for all the concern and well wishes!!!

Great news MM & MP - back motoring again!

Along the exact sames lines, last night I was at Crown completing the paperwork on my MCS when low and behold an Indi Blue Cooper arrived on a flatbed. The owner said the fans just stopped working and the temp gauge maxed out. Told him it was a known problem and to check MINI2 for discussions.

So, is the problem that debris gets caught in the p/s fan (in which case the fan screen may help), or is it a case where the fan bearings just seize up? That fan is pretty exposed to road dust. If the bearing is a cheapy, then the fan needs to be replaced.

I'm not sure where I'd look for a rough-service fan that size.

(BTW, in one of last year's Ozzie Super V-8 races, the series points leader picked up some plastic bags in his radiator grill. It was nip and tuck to finish before he overheated. I suppose it would be possible to pick up paper or plastic in the p/s fan.)

I've seen pics of this odd exposed fan before. I have to say that it really sounds like a poor design decision that was a last minute addition to solve some kind of design deficiency.

Oh well, I guess I'll find out in a few weeks. My MINI is "en route."

The exact same episode happened to me last week so I guess it can happen even with a white roof!

When (what month/year) did MINI production "fix" the problem of having the Power Steering fan and the radiator fan on the same circuit?

I am going on a long trip and want to make sure I have some spare fuses for the power steering fan, what kind of fuse is it, FMX 30, 40 or 50?

Hypothetically, if something (a plastic bag for instance) got caught up in the fan, and the fuse blew and the MINI lost its power steering capabilities, isn't it possible to just remove the object (carefully), replace the fuse, and cross fingers that the fan will still turn?

Thanks for the tip,

Joe
