Talking "Follow Me Home" Lights?

Just been looking through another thread, and the MINI Cooper (Chili) I drove doesn't seem to have this feature. It was a xx03, most recent build with autolock/unlocking doors, glovebox, total closure from key in door and windows down with remote etc. But not the follow me home feature - should it have?

If so that'd be well cool!

I believe that if you ask them the dealer can program it in.

Maybe you have it a don't now that you have it.
Have your engine running turn on the headlights, then turn off the engine then turn off the headlight switch. If your lights stay on when you do this then you have follow me home. The lights should turn off in 90sec.

Or as much as 240 if you're as foolish as I was to request that long a delay...

Seemed a good idea at the time!

Or, on the other hand, as little as 40 seconds if you're as foolish as I was thinking that would be enough time.

I just had mine done at my 10k visit, and they are a blessing in the dark canyon where I live... leading me to my front door. But, they set them at 40 seconds. Not enough time to make it up to the house... How do we change the times? I will keep searching, so I'm sorry if that is posted somewhere... Thanks.

Activating them, or adjusting their duration, are both dealer-only functions.

In short, it's a delay option that when you switch off the car, the lights remain on for a while so you can see your door/whatever.

Thanks BruceK. I was hoping you wouldn't say that.. I would think they would have asked me. This feature is really handy for me at least one night a week when we come home after dark, and the moon is not in some type of full-phase. I know, a motion detector light... I have one, but in a canyon, with the wildlife (which is cool!), it comes on often - too often. I now keep that function off. The follow me home lights are a blessing in this regard. 40 seconds is just not enough time when I have some things in the boot to offload....

Thanks guys. A phone call to my dealer in next...

I think 40 seconds is too much for me. I have to keep looking back to make sure the lights are going to go off and that I didn't accidently leave them on.

Thanks Paul, that sounds like a good feature..I just never heard it called follow me home lights before.. So do the dealers program it for free if you ask them or do they charge?

Programming's at the dealer's option how they handle it. Definetly, they should ask you before delivery what you want as far as all the programming options that may be available for your car. After that, it depends on the dealer. It actually takes only a few minutes once they plug your car in. Sometimes a dealer will charge a minimum charge, but more likely, if you bring it in for something else, they may change the programming for free.

Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball.

Adam

can you accidently leave them on, because if you turn them off after the engine is off then the follow me home lights work, and if you turn them off before the engine is off then they will be OFF

So i suppose if you turned the the lights on and off again after the engine is off they would stay on, not much of an accident
