Question Does anybody else find the auto-locking annoying?

I don't want to sound like a whiner, but I really find the auto-locking annoying when I reach that certain speed (still unsure about what speed that is). I thought it would be a nice feature to have, but I'm going in to my dealer tomorrow to have my alignment and a few rattles looked at after nailing the stupid curb with my front left tire, and I'm going to see if the dealer can take it off, I really hate it.

But I still love everything else about the Mini!!

You betcha! Thank god it can be turned off. I made DAMN sure it was disabled before I took delivery. It's very sad that society has degenerated into a state of perpetual irrational paranoia. What are people so frickin scared of? Anthrax? SARS? Jeez, people just get some duct tape and you'll be fine.

Anyway, while you're there you can "disable Selective CL RC" such that the doors and hatch unlock with a single press of the remote. Just watch out for the boogeyman!

Boo!

First thing we had disabled on the wife's Cherokee, and it will be disabled on my MINI before driving it off the lot.

Question: is it possible to have that feature disabled yet have the "auto-unlock when parked" feature enabled? Those two features aren't married are they?

I don't get what the problem is?
It unlocks when you stop, it unlocks if you have a crash, and it does increase safety so far as people grabbing things from your boot or diving into your passenger seat while sat at lights etc. Instances of which ARE sadly on the increase, at least in the UK.

Personally, I find the auto lock feature to be of no concern. It took about 3 trips in the Mini to get in the habit of pulling the handle twice to open the door.

>>It's very sad that society has degenerated into a state of perpetual irrational paranoia.<<

Depending on where you live and drive, the paranoia may not be all that irrational. It is a sad state of affairs when this does become a social problem, but there are a few people out there who'll testify to the fact that it's there.

As for the remote unlock feature, I think it's great. No more worry of an accidentally marred door because my key doesn't come anywhere near it.

I live in a city, and as such I think it's a good feature.
The only time I curse this feature is when I get the car
in a parking lot and bring it around to the curb to let
my wife in, and forget that I have to unlock it again
before she can open the door. And, it can always be
disabled by the dealer if desired. By the way, it locks at
about 12 mph.

I like it. Always a good idea to have your door locked when in the city. Maybe there are no car-jackings in Canada.

I like it too. Have gotten in the habit of flipping the toggle to open the doors when I get out, rather than hassling with the double pull.

The thing is, thugs don't go around jumping into peoples' cars. Kinda like Anthrax, snipers, and SARS, it might have happened to one or two people at some point but you have a guaranteed 0% chance of being affected. So long as you have enough duct tape.

BTW you can have it programmed to automatically unlock when you turn off the ignition. Much better than yanking the handle over and over in a paranoid frenzy.

Mine unlocks.

I just dont see what's to not like about it. I can't really see the cons. It locks when you drive off, it unlocks when you stop. I don't see why that would bother people?

So, you mean if a perpetrator dove into your car, you could just turn the ignition off and the doors would automatically unlock so that you could jump out to safety?!

Mine isn't programmed for the auto unlock, but I am sure gonna get it NOW!

Huh? Two pulls on the door handle? You don't have to do that. Why not get the auto-unlock feature enabled?

I don't have auto lock on my MINI, but I do have auto-unlock: when I turn the key to switch off my car, it automatically unlocks (assuming I have manually locked it during the journey, which I occaisionally do).

Actually, Bruce, I had intended to do that. I didn't know it was available when I got my Mini. When I take it in for servicing, it is on my list of things I want programmed.

Whoa, I really started something here!

I find it annoying that if I'm dropping someone off or something like that (not turning the ignition off, and still getting out), that I have to pull twice, or hit the unlock button.

If its so easy to just double pull, or just hit the unlock button, then why not just hit the button to lock it if you're that worried about something? It's just as easy.

Why does the auto lock have to be accompanied by the double pull anyway? Why did Mini put it together that way? Just curious. Anyone know?

Good point, my brothers VW GTI has an automatic locking mechanism same as the Mini, but it only requires one pull from the inside to open the door, much better IMO.
