Damaged Mini

Just received a call today from my Mini dealer. My Cooper S was damaged while on the production line. The production date is 5/9/03. The dealer now has provided a new production # and informs me it will be in 6/03.

How does a vehicle get so badly damaged on the assembly line that requires a new production/vin #? I am now $2,000 into this vehicle since 1/03 and still no Cooper in sight.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I won't guess how it was damaged, (its easy to see something totally freaky like a robot breaking and falling, etc) but honestly, waiting sucks, but you're way better off getting a new production #. Fixing the car from anything minor will never make it as good as new, repainting and such is always not the same as new no matter how good it is, and people regularly have dealer and transport damage, you never know how it works out until 5 years later when the paint starts to fade slightly differently, or you get more creaks, etc, etc.

See if your dealer or MINI can give you something to makeup for the wait, like free floormats, or maybe an extra option if the spec is still flexible on the new production. You'll be way happier in the end you waited and got a perfect car.

I think you should thank MINI for being forthcoming about your new car status. You are getting a brand new spanking replacement.....you should be happy. Another brand would have given you a repaired car sold as new.

Patience is a good virtue and one that is not really appreciated in our "Coke machine" cultural mentallity. Good things come to those who wait....

So hold on tight and enjoy your new MINI once it arrives.

Strange thing's can happen !! .

My niece recentely had a Ford Fiesta Zetec on order .

The dealer called and informed her that she would have to Re-Order as her car had ' FALLEN ' off the back of the transporter at the factory !!.

Ford apparentely told the dealer that it would be repaired and despatched ASAP.

Fortunately the dealer turned this option down.

First time I've heard of a car that ' Fell of the back of a Lorry' !!.

Video player's yes !.

Sounds about right for Ford.

Thanks for the input everyone. I believe I have been patient with Mini since 1/03 and $2,000 in deposits to establish my order.

It's unfortunate my order will be cancelled and my $ will be put towards another vehicle. I appreciate the time spent on this site. Thank you Paul!

Best Wishes

Rick

Oh well. At least someone else will get to buy that MINI. Your loss is someone else's gain.

June's only a month away. Personally I would have waited. All the best with whatever alternative you go for.

If you're really giving up, that's fine, but sad. How specific was your order? Its quite possible you could find almost the same thing sitting on a lot on the east coast, or on a boat almost here already. You may want to check the dealer's forum and make some phone calls before you give up entirely if you really want the car.

Why did you have to leave a $2,000 deposit in the first place?

The Mini dealer requested $1,000.00 to put name on waiting list and then requested $1,000.00 to place the order.

My spec was 03 Mini Cooper S indi blue/black- with sports pkg, leather and mfsw.

My dealer only requests $500 deposit for first time Cooper or MCS customer orders and $0 deposit for repeat customer orders.

That is an abysmal amount of money just to get an order placed. If I were you I would go elsewhere even if it meant a cross country driving trip, which is a great excuse to get your new MINI (Vacation/New car)

Update,

I checked the owners lounge to see if my Mini order was cancelled. Now it states that my Mini has been built and awaiting transport.

I am confused since my Mini dealer told me on 5/12/03 that it was damaged on the assembly line, thus requiring a new production/vin#. What is going on?

I would first contact MINI customer services on the phone and ask them if they can verify the current status of your car according to your VIN.

Then I would call your dealer and ask for clarification.
