Dangerous Air Freshener

I expect like many of you out there, I received a free MINI air freshener when I first registered my interests on the mini.co.uk site. When I took delivery of my car last June, I decided to open the packet, but was horrified by the awful pong! So, I hung it up in the spare room for a few months to exhaust the smell and then, because it looked so cute, I thought I'd put it in my car. After careful interior design thinking, I attached it to one of the central air vents, so it was 'resting' on the dashboard. You will appreciate the shock I had today when I moved it, to find burn blisters on the dash! I couldn't understand what had happened and immediately rang the dealers. They said the perfume in the freshener had probably reacted with the dash coating and suggested I bring him in for an inspection (going tomorrow).
May be I should have known this could happen, but not being of a scientific mind, I didn't consider it.

Luckily, I had kept the outer packet (I never throw away anything MINI related) and it quite clearly states - "For maximum aromatic joy, simply hang anywhere you fancy"
I'm hoping this statement will help me?!

I am very concerned/upset as it has ruined the whole dashboard and would advice anyone who has one of these fresheners, to be careful where they hang it.
I'd be grateful to hear from anybody who has experienced any similar problems.

Hi Sally:
What a basher of a story. I hope you get some relief from the dealer. I will definitely be taking any air fresheners I get and using them someplace other than a mini.

IMHO hang usually implies not leaning against

Very different from the promotional air freshener distributed by MINIUSA. In the shape of a MINI silhouette, it was intentionally odorless so the new car smell could be enjoyed!
