Offline | buy extended warranty? im about to finalize my purchase of my 2003 cooper and was wondering if buying the extended warranty (which would leave me covered for 7yrs/100000miles) through my dealer. the cost is about $1800. just was wondering if it was worth buying as ive been reading that people have been having some problems with their cars thus far... |

Offline | You can buy the warranty right before the factory 4 year/50K mile expires. Don't buy it now....you know why? Because they will make it effective immediately, not after the factory warranty expires. So, instead of buying an extra 7 years of coverage (4 + 7 = 11 years warranty coverage) you are paying $1,800 for practically 3 years of coverage from the aftermarket warranty. What's the mileage limitation on the aftermarket warranty? Let's say that you have a 75,000 mileage cap on the extended warranty. If you drive more than 75K during the first 4 years....both warranties would have expired and you had spend $1,800 for nothing...think about it. Extended warranties only make sense if you decide to keep the car for a longer period of time closer to the expiration of the new car factory warranty. Offline | extended warrenty Your are correct in stating that you can buy the extended warrenty at any time as long as the car is still under the origional factory warrenty. However, the start time for the additional coverage goes back to the origional date of purchase. In other words it is not 4 yrs 50k plus another 7 years 100k. No matter when you purchase the warrenty, it is still only going to cover you for two more additional years and 50k additional miles. Did that help? I am going to wait and see how the car does the first few years before forking over that much money. |
