Offline | Calling USA Hire Car help I ve got a week in San Fran coming up on business. Need to hire a car, am limited to Hertz or Avis (personnaly I prefer Avis) so question is what car should I take? Whilst not limited on cost I do have to set a good example to my guys, so im really looking at group C or D cars. Not gonna do many miles, but dont want to end up in a real dog although none of them really appeal!! Most of the cars available we dont get in the UK options seem to include Oldsmobile Alero Chevy Monte Carlo Mustang Coupe (I did have a convertible last trip, but it was a horrid drive). Buick Century Open to suggestions from Non-Avis/Hertz as long as they are on site at SFO (maybe somebody knows of a place renting Nissan 350's???) Thanks guys 'You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off.' SOLD it! |

Offline | Most Americans don't know what a group C or D car is. Do you need a 4 door? If you go with Hertz then you'll get Fords. Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Volvo, Jaguar, & Mazda. |

Offline | The Alero would probably be the best driving of those four cars, though not the most glamorous. i was once lucky enough to rent a Nissan Maxima from Hertz. National and Budget rent a car have been good to work with too. |

Offline | I won't offend anyone (since I know some people own such cars in addition to their MINIs) but essentially, the only thing rented (hired) at mainstream places in the US in the standard/full size are cushy American cars. You should be able to get a jaguar or a lincoln from Hertz but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for. You can't rent 'cool' things like a 350z from normal places. However, if you feel like spending money, a quick net search showed up http://www.specialtyrentals.com (but I bet there's others) which will rent you a 350z for about $1000 for a week, or a Z4 for $1600 or a Cooper for $750. (they might charge extra for airport pickup according to the fine print). I just checked luxury cars, and an Infinity Q45 is just over $500 for a week (not a bad price considering what you'd pay at a normal place to get a Buick) Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |

Offline | Of that short list, the Mustang's probably the best, Alero's come in coupe and sedan versions, you should check which one. Why'd you think the Mustang was horrible? Unfortunately the companies usually only offer the base models, so you get the worst engine that no one really should buy. A buick centry is a totally mainstream family type car, I'd very much avoid it. Here's edmunds.com's review of the Monte Carlo: What Edmunds.com Says Questionable throwback styling cues, lethargic handling and a characterless interior make this a last-resort coupe at best. Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |

Offline | I assume the Mustang comes in different engine sizes and I got a small version. It was forever 'kicking down' increasing the volume but not the speed!! 'You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off.' SOLD it! |

Offline | You probably did. There's about 5 different Mustang engines, from a 190hp V6 up to a 400hp supercharged V8. My fist car had a 3 speed automatic. Go, Loud, Louder. I know what you mean. The Coupe's lighter, but you'll probably have the same problems. Any better options you have from Avis or Hertz? Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |
