are there any problems to watch for in buying a mini? any inherent problems with the car?

yeah, don't buy from the first dealer you go to, try to get quotes from 2/3, and see what extra's you can get for free, push as hard as you can, and don't let them lead you. TLC is a must, and along with anything else, try to get it thrown in

I wouldn't say there are any more than with any other new model car except the wait.... buy whats available or prepare to drive what you've got for a little longer!

Trust not the heart of a man for whom old clothes, and the Mini, are not venerable!

I know early models had a few faults - but mine is fault free ( only 4 days old ) - with no problem at all...

I think the ironing out was done over the last eighteen months. Remember the MINI was a totally new car with components that had never been bolted together before in a totally refurbished factory - so you were bound to get some niggles but lets hopr that in the past,( x fingers)
