Does it really whine THAT much

The title ses it all, does the Cooper S (new 1) whine as much as motoring journalists say it does, ive never been in a moving Cooper S and when 1 drives past, i only here tire noise, or the exhaust, Cooper S owners, enlighten me

Oh it whines alright!

But don't get me wrong, it doesn't whine to the point where the windows all shatter and your ear-drums start to bleed, its more of a powerful whine that makes you a proud driver of the MCS. You'll love it!

Its the reason all MCS owners have a grin on their face when they're driving.

It has a pleasant wine that is barely noticable until you pick up the throttle, then, when mixed w/ the exhaust noise, it just sounds powerful (albeit not overly loud)

interesting, ive read reports that its, and i quote this, "like a NORMAL car reversing", well, at least they got 1 bit right, the Mini is no ordinary car, its special, and round here, Cooper S' are still quite rare

For some reason I found this comment interesting. I think the shifter in my MCS is accurate, but not that great and always figured it was because it was a cable shifter. The Borg Warner T56 six speed transmission in my other car is a rail shifter (no linkage, shifter sits on top of the tranny and directly shift the internal rail) has a much more direct feel and with the Pro5.0 shifter has a definate short, "snick snick snick" feel to it. I only wish I could duplicate that feel in my MINI

As a side note, Borg Warner sold their transmission group to Tremec in '97. The T56 six speeds in 1998+ vehicles are Tremecs (basically the same tranny, but it did have a couple of minor changes). FWIW, there were far more problems with the Tremec T56 transmissions than there was back when BW owned them (the T56 is most commonly used in GM F-bodies (Camaro Z28, Formula, TransAM), Y-bodies (Corvette) and in the Dodge Viper).

I hardly ever hear my supercharger whine either
