Offline | Manual A/C V's Climate Control I have a Cooper with climate control which is faulty (doesn't get very cold/ responds in odd way) and am getting a replacement car. Should I spec in manual A/C instead or take a risk and go for climate again? |

Offline | We also have the manual A/C and works wonders. Just turn 1 of the three rotary knobs and presto you have immediate cabin comfort! '02 MINI Cooper CVT On Order: 2004 MCS (Est production date: 9/5/03) |

Offline | We actually optioned around the package (paid more!) to get the Manual A/C. It eliminates the dreaded orange-lighted-number-in-the-middle-of-the-dash, and makes temperature selection a simple and intuitive "twist of the wrist." We still like it much better. Offline | Both systems are fine, but if you don't want to be constantly fiddling with the buttons go for the climate control. Manual systems do require a lot of tinkering to get the temperature just right and then once you do, the sun goes in and it goes too cold... more fiddling required ![]() It's really a personal preference if you like playing with your knobs or not ![]() MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. Offline | You don't have to fiddle with the rotary knobs endlessly...that is nonsense. Quite on the contrary, I see most Climate control owners fiddling with their "Automatic" system because the thing seems to have a mind of his own and doesn't seem to work as advertaised. With the manual controls, you set the temperature, fan speed and air flow direction and you are done. Face it, a lot of climate control owners like the high tech look of the buttons and the LCD orange display than the actual functionality it is capable of providing. Offline | I think not ![]() All the manual a/c does when you set the "temperature" gauge is to set the percentage of a/c and heat it will let into the cabin. If the temperature outside the car changes, the temperature inside the car will change too as the cooling/heating of the air will remain constant. Climate control will take outside air temperature into account and adjust accordingling. Correct me if I'm wrong but I donn't think the manual a/c system has a thermostat so does not shut off when it's too hot or cold. If it's too hot or too cold it's up to the driver to adjust, hence the term "manual". I know for sure in the UK the temperature changes vary considerably in a journey due to our crazy climate so constant fiddling is required. In a more constant climate I can foresee less fiddling is needed. MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. It's now TTime ![]() ![]() Unofficial MINI2.com bean counter |

Offline | I like to "set it and forget it"... but I see this as $$ decision - if you have the money, its cool, if you don't it ain't that big a deal to do without. Trust not the heart of a man for whom old clothes, and the Mini, are not venerable! |

Offline | Does anyone know how the insides of these systems actually work to mix hot and cool air for the correct temperature? Many cars have air boxes with flappers (valves) that are controlled by the levers or dials on the dash. Offline | I agree with you and have decided to go for manual. I have had climate in a BMW and it was excellent. However the system in the mini is very noisy, fiddly and reacts to temperature changes with all the precision of a ham fisted village idiot. The idea of climate is great but the delivery by mini is poor. I think if i get it again it will probably still be 'faulty'. |

| MINI2 Master | I had auto aircon for five days in a BMW loan car a while back. It was a nightmare. It never was a "set and forget" thing, because I don't always want to be at a uniform temperature. Sometimes I feel hot and sometimes I feel cold, regardless of what the actual temperature inside or outside of the car might be. It was quite a distraction to fiddle with the auto a/c controls to make it hotter or colder. Didn't get along with that at all. |
